Description

Incumbent serves as Paralegal  for the Boone County Circuit Court Judge and, in addition, is responsible for performing daily office operations and providing paralegal, administrative and service support to Circuit Court Office personnel.

Incumbent performs duties according to standard Circuit Court policies and procedures with work priorities primarily determined by the Judge, office manager and/or service needs of parties and/or counsel.   Assistance in all areas of the court will be required therefore igniting an ongoing working knowledge of effective daily running of an active court.  Inability to work as a team member or unwillingness to learn and grow in the position would make it unproductive for the court and its team members.  


Examples of Duties

  • Processing daily tasks queues through Odyssey data system;
  • Proofreading, correcting, and entering handwritten judicial orders per request of Judge; 
  • Attending to special tasks per Judge’s request (resolving scheduling conflicts, corresponding with case parties, reporting discrepancies in filed documents., etc.);
  • Appointing case parties and acting as chief contact when deemed necessary (Appraisers, Attorneys, Court Appointed Experts, State Public Defenders, Mental Health Facilities, Mental Health, Competency Evaluators and others);
  • Acting as contact for all out-of-county Special Judge cases including corresponding with other county contacts and maintaining special judge filing system; 
  • Preparing and maintaining jury binders to be used in Jury Trials;
  • Setting hearings for TEAMS virtual online meetings;
  • Contacting various courthouse departments for assistance (IT, maintenance, utilities…);
  • Assisting with various office duties:  Answering phone calls, tending to the public, dispensing mail.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma.  Preference given to applicants with a college and/or university background and/or applicants with experience in a previous legal setting.
Candidate must possess good vocabulary and writing skills and be proficient in Word and capable of learning new data programs. 
Must possess the ability to present themselves in a professional manner when dealing with the public in person, on the telephone or through email communications and effectively communicate in these manners.
Candidate must be able to multi-task and assist in other areas of office duties when needed and maintain a cool demeanor when experiencing a high level of office activity and workload.
Must obtain a working knowledge of standard filing systems and maintenance of same.  
Must possess the ability to understand, memorize, retain and carry out oral and written instructions.
Must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement related to Court business.
