What we want

The attorney will provide trainings on immigration bond hearings (custody redetermination hearings) and help develop a pro bono network of attorneys who can provide representation in these cases. The attorney will also provide direct representation in some immigration bond proceedings. The attorney’s administrative duties include assisting with the coordination of pro bono legal services, maintaining detailed records, communicating with volunteers, and handling various administrative tasks to ensure the successful implementation of the pro bono program.

Salary Range: $5800-$6,666 monthly commensurate with experience

Other Factors: This position is grant funded, currently for six months; continued employment is contingent upon availability grant funding.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Five years of related experience in legal practice

Required Licenses and Certifications: 

  • Licensed by a state bar for a minimum of 5 years

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Spanish preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Word and Excel spreadsheet applications

  • Knowledge of legal research systems

  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, CLIO Case Management system

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality

  • Ability to supervise law students and assign and review their work

Responsibilities

Supervision of Volunteer Attorneys and Project Administration

  • Manage pro bono bond hearing project

  • Organize trainings for pro bono volunteer attorneys on immigration bond hearings

  • Maintain and update the database of pro bono volunteers, including lawyers, law firms, and other partners(interpreters). Maintain database of clients helped.

  • Communicate with pro bono volunteers and clients to provide updates and collect necessary information (send sample bond documents, faqs, video training)

  • Recruit and onboard new volunteers

  • Maintain filing systems for pro bono records

  • Manage correspondence, answering phones, and handling inquiries

  • Support program evaluations and assessments to measure the impact of pro bono efforts

  • Assist with managing budgets and resources related to this project

  • Give surveys to volunteers/maintain answers

Handle Court Hearings

  • Provide individual representation in immigration bond hearings in a professional manner that upholds and enhances the reputation of the Law Clinic

  • Take over immigration bond cases when students are unavailable, including hearings

Collaborating with Immigrant Rights Clinic

  • Refer select cases to Director of Immigrant Rights Clinic

  • Work with Director of Immigrant Rights Clinic to help supervise law students providing representation in immigration bond hearings

  • Advise/train students about representation in immigration bond hearings to help build the network of attorneys knowledgeable about this kind of representation (e.g. strategy, research, supporting evidence, drafting briefs, preparing for trial, conducting hearings, etc.)

  • Provide organizational and administrative support in Law Clinic operations
