Position Details:

Employment Counsel is a member of the firm’s Legal Team and the head of the firm wide employee relations and compliance function, working in collaboration with senior leadership, business leaders, the General Counsel’s office, outside counsel, and the HR team. This role will provide expertise, advice and guidance to internal stakeholders to ensure the successful investigation and resolution of complex or sensitive employee relations issues, consistent application of workplace policies and procedures and compliance with global employment laws and regulations. Employment Counsel will also draft the firm’s employment policies, oversee employee relations tools and processes, and provide proactive solutions to mitigate legal risks.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day advice to HR and management on all areas of labor and employment law and global HR policies. 

  • Research, review and draft employment-related policies and advise on potential implications of non-compliance.

  • Work across multiple business groups to assist employees and managers in resolving issues and grievances.

  • Integrate and partner with the General Counsel’s office, outside legal counsel and other members of the Global People team to implement solutions to employment issues.

  • Develop and present training programs to HR professionals and management on legislative developments and best practices to mitigate risks.

  • Work with the business groups to highlight risks and key trends in employee relations and actively drive training, systems and process improvement.

  • Lead efforts in resolving immigration issues in partnership with outside counsel.

  • Own annual review of the Employee Handbook and other employment policies and stay abreast of workplace and industry trends to make recommendations for policy changes.

  • Provide support on benefits and compensation compliance and other aspects of workplace strategy as needed.

  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Global People Officer or General Counsel.

Requirements:

  • JD required (NY Bar membership or ability to waive in on motion).

  • Demonstrated expertise in all aspects of U.S. employment laws including FMLA, ADA, wage & hour and the ability to partner with outside counsel on global employment law matters.

  • Understanding of, and experience with, all core areas of human resource management (staffing, employee relations, performance management, benefits, compensation, diversity and inclusion, compliance).

  • Extensive experience conducting, coordinating and handling internal investigations of employment-related complaints.

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.

  • Exercise a high degree of professionalism and diplomacy in interactions with all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrated skill in handling a variety of employee relations matters.

  • Excellent follow through skills and the ability to anticipate and address business needs proactively.

  • Possess strong work ethic; self-motivated with a desire to take initiative and look for ways to improve processes and create efficiencies.

  • Highly adaptable to a fluid and ever-changing work environment

  • Experience in leading management training and serving as a coach to managers.

  • Desire to be a champion for a positive workplace culture and proven experience in leading organizational change.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to a high standard of professional conduct.

At the time of posting, the salary range for this role is $166,000 (minimum) – $249,000 (maximum). This range is based on a full-time work schedule. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary bonus. The successful candidate’s actual salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, qualifications, licensure/certifications, training, skills, and market data.
