
Job Summary:
The Associate General Counsel will support the General Counsel by providing legal advice, counsel, representation, and other legal services to executives and staff regarding legal matters, with areas of responsibility including contracts, intellectual property, employment, and corporate matters. Business units supported include publishing (books and curriculum), music (song publishing and record label), global ministry, and new initiatives. The role requires sound legal judgment, proactive risk mitigation, and the ability to operate effectively across a broad legal portfolio in a mission-driven organization.
Job Responsibilities:
Provides responsive, strategic legal support to the General Counsel across all ministry business units. Proactively identifies legal risks, ensures full compliance with applicable laws and internal governance, and delivers clear, well-reasoned counsel in a timely manner.
Drafts, reviews, and negotiates a variety of contracts with precision and efficiency. Supports contract lifecycle processes and ensures agreements reflect ministry objectives and minimize legal risk.
Partners with senior leadership to assess legal implications of strategic initiatives, mergers and acquisitions, and business development efforts. Provides proactive, solutions-oriented legal guidance that enables informed decision-making and organizational alignment.
Job Qualifications
Education/Certifications: Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, with strong academic credentials
Experience: 7-10+ years of applicable legal experience required. Expertise in intellectual property, publishing, music transactions, and nonprofit law is strongly preferred. High level of proficiency in transactional work experience is required Familiarity with employment law, data privacy regulations, and corporate compliance programs is desirable. Position located in Colorado Springs, CO or Nashville, TN.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Member in good standing with the Colorado or Tennessee Bar Association ((or ability to gain admission promptly).
- Flexibility and ability to manage a high volume of complex projects simultaneously
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment Ability to respond quickly and appropriately time-sensitive legal issues and emergencies
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision exercising initiative and sound legal judgment Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across diverse internal and external stakeholders Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Advanced research and analytical skills with the ability to distill complex legal issues into practical advice Sound judgment and high degree of integrity and discretion.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Zoom, Cobblestone (preferred), and Excel.
Physical Requirements, Working Conditions:
- Comfortable working conditions, handling lightweight, intermittent sitting, standing and walking.
- Working environment – cubicle office and co-working spaces with some noise
- Detail-oriented work requiring mental acuity and accuracy
- Normal business hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.MT or CT) are typical but must have a willingness and flexibility to work during evenings and weekends if/when necessary.
- Travel – 25%.
