Job Description

Description

Make your administrative talent count!

The City and Borough of Juneau Law Department is seeking a Paralegal to join our Criminal Division staff.

If you thrive on organization, multitasking, and keeping complex workflows humming, the City and Borough of Juneau Law Department offers an exciting next step. This fast-paced position serves as one of two indispensable partners to two municipal prosecutors, moving every misdemeanor case from the first police report through final disposition.

Each day begins with reviewing new charges and opening electronic case files; throughout the day, this position updates our electronic case management system, tracks court deadlines, and prepares routine legal documents such as motions and subpoenas under attorney direction. After an initial onsite training period, qualified employees may transition to a hybrid schedule that includes remote work. This position requires coordination with police officers, defense counsel, and court staff, ensuring that everyone has the right information at the right moment.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The successful candidate will have:

  • Above all, a strong work ethic and desire to learn new skills
  • Reliable and consistent attendance
  • Excellent ability to navigate computer databases
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong ability to stay focused in a busy work environment
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changes and improvements
  • A collaborative spirit to accomplish assigned tasks and projects with a small high-energy team
  • General familiarity with legal terminology, concepts, and research practice

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK IN OUR DEPARTMENT

The Law Department consists of ten professionals split between the Criminal and Civil sections, lending big-picture exposure to department operations while still preserving a close-knit atmosphere. Aside from the other Criminal section paralegal and two prosecutors, this position works alongside a Civil section paralegal and reports to the Office Manager, who support the City Attorney and three Civil section attorneys.

The Law Department offices are located in the Sealaska Plaza Building in the heart of downtown Juneau. The Law Department prizes innovation, continuous improvement, and professional growth and development. We operate an all-electronic case-management system and regularly evaluate new tools, so as a member of our team, this position is encouraged to develop new skills and contribute ideas for streamlining workflows. The variety of tasks ensures that no two days will feel exactly alike, and we place a strong emphasis on camaraderie and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

WHAT THE CBJ CAN OFFER YOU

In this position you will receive a competitive salary package that includes the opportunity for regular pay increases, 12 paid holidays each year, an excellent health insurance program that includes medical, vision, dental and orthodontia care options, paid leave, and retirement credit through PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System).

We value the health and well-being of our employees. The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) provides free parking, the ability to participate in a robust wellness program that includes discounts to CBJ recreational centers and local fitness programs, free bi-annual health screenings, free flu shots, free classes, challenges, and webinars on healthy living to assist you with achieving work/life balance.
