Under executive direction with the widest latitude for the exercise of independent judgment serves as First Assistant Corporation Counsel. From an executive level gives direction and counsel to the other members of the Executive Staff; and gives direction and counsel to the Division Chiefs and their attorneys on matters of policy, and on important individual cases, as needed. The incumbent develops legal policy and provides legal advice to the Corporation Counsel, the Mayor, and other City Officials. Pursuant to the City Charter, the First Assistant Corporation Counsel will, “during the absence or disability of the Corporation Counsel, possess all powers and perform all the duties of the Corporation Counsel .”

Qualifications

Applicants must be admitted and in good standing with the New York State Bar. Applicants must have substantial experience successfully leading teams of attorneys and support professionals. They also must possess experience with and knowledge of the legal issues that our Divisions manages. Applicants must show a demonstrated commitment to our agency’s values of diversity, equity and inclusion, excellence, dedication, respect, professional development, supportive work environment, teamwork and justice. Applicants should be creative problem-solvers and should be able to demonstrate dedication to growing and developing the skills of all staff members. Excellent communication skills and an ability to strategically plan and address the evolving needs of the Law Department are also important.
