Summary

The deputy prosecuting attorney prosecutes on behalf of the State of Washington and Grays Harbor County all felonies, gross misdemeanors, misdemeanors, probation violations in Superior Court and District Court, including infractions in Juvenile Court and traffic infractions through the District Courts, at the discretion of the duly elected Prosecuting Attorney.  This includes evaluation, filing and preparation of the case through trial and sentencing and may require the handling of appeals.

Essential Duties

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to exercise discretion, as supervised by the Chief Criminal Deputy and the Prosecuting Attorney, as to when criminal charges should be filed, what charges are to be filed and the appropriate sentencing recommendation to make to the court;
  • Ability to advise all victims and witnesses of their rights and ensure that they are treated fully and fairly within the criminal justice system;
  • Sufficient knowledge and ability to advise law enforcement agencies during investigation, prepares search warrants, prepares and files Information or Criminal Complaints, prepares and files petitions for the revocation of probation and obtains arrest warrants; and, 
  • Ability to assist the Prosecuting Attorney and the other deputies in the office, as needed, and can become involved in any of the functions of the prosecuting attorney's office.  The deputy prosecutor may be assigned, based on qualifications and experience, to any divisions within the office, at the discretion of the Prosecuting Attorney.
  • Ability to take over and handle all aspects of criminal prosecution without significant supervision and without the need for extensive on-the-job training.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications


  1. Must be a member of the Washington State Bar Association
  2. DPA I -  minimum of one to three years experience as an attorney.
  3. DPA II - minimum of three years to five years of practice as an attorney, preferably in prosecution of criminal offenses;
