Job Description

CONTROLLER

Morrison Mahoney LLP is seeking a Controller who will play a key leadership role in overseeing accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance for our law firm. This senior position requires someone ready to roll up their sleeves - balancing strategic financial guidance with day-to-day execution to ensure accuracy, integrity, and efficiency.

We offer a competitive salary ranging from $160,000 to $190,000 in addition to benefits such as hybrid work arrangements (after an introductory period), Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k), Life Insurance, Health Savings Account, Flexible Spending Account, Flexible Paid Time Off, Parental Leave, Military Leave, Employee Discounts, and a mobile phone reimbursement stipend.

Why Join Morrison Mahoney?

We are proud to be recognized as one of the premier litigation law firms in the Northeast. As our Controller, you'll step into a highly visible role where your expertise directly shapes the financial health and operational success of the firm. You'll work alongside respected AV-rated attorneys and firm leadership, gaining both influence and impact while also leading a team. Beyond the numbers, you'll find a collaborative culture that values your insights, supports your professional growth, and is genuinely invested in your long-term career success.

A Day in the Life

No two days are ever the same. As Controller, you'll balance strategic oversight with hands-on execution - moving seamlessly from reviewing financial reports and monitoring cash flow to advising leadership on forecasts and profitability. You'll collaborate closely with the Director of Finance, attorneys, and your accounting team to ensure compliance, accuracy, and efficiency in all financial operations. Some days you may be deep in analysis, others focused on advancing system upgrades or coordinating with auditors and tax advisors. Every day, your expertise will play a critical role in safeguarding the firm's financial health and driving its long-term success.

What Matters Most

To succeed in this role, you will need a robust set of skills and qualifications:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Management & Reporting - Lead all core accounting functions, including AP/AR, trust/IOLTA accounts, and general ledger. Ensure accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, manage budgets and forecasts, oversee tax filings, monitor cash flow, and provide financial performance insights to firm leadership.
  • Compliance & Internal Controls - Safeguard the firm's assets and integrity by maintaining strong internal controls, ensuring compliance with IOLTA and tax regulations, overseeing audits and payroll, and leading system upgrades and process improvements in alignment with GAAP and firm policies.
  • Team Leadership - Supervise and mentor accounting staff, promote accountability and continuous improvement, manage vendor and payment processes, and provide financial training and guidance to attorneys and administrative teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership role (professional services or law firm experience preferred).
  • Expertise in law firm accounting, trust/IOLTA account management, and legal billing structures.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (Elite, Aderant) and advanced Excel skills (e.g., TEXTJOIN, XLOOKUP).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities with keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present complex financial information to both financial and non-financial audiences.
  • High integrity, professionalism, and discretion in handling sensitive information.

Let's Connect!

Step into a leadership role where your financial expertise drives strategy, strengthens operations, and supports one of the Northeast's premier litigation firms. At Morrison Mahoney, you'll have the independence to lead, the collaboration of a supportive team, and the opportunity to shape the firm's financial future.
