Department Title: Undergrad Intern – Legal

Location: The intern candidate must be able to commute into the New York City office on a weekly basis.  

Position Summary: 

The Fiduciary Trust team provides legal support to Fiduciary Trust and all of its subsidiaries, including corporate secretary/governance matters, Board and Audit Committee meetings/materials/minutes, contracts for managed, trust and custody clients, vendor contracts, M&A activities and private funds.

The Collective Investment Trust (CIT) team provides legal support for all of the Franklin Templeton CITs, including those for which Putnam Fiduciary Trust Company or Fiduciary International of the South serve as trustee, as well as those for which a third party serves as trustee (Great Gray Trust Company, Hand Benefit Trust Company, Alta Trust Company, etc.)

The U.S. ERISA/Retirement Services team focuses on providing legal support and advice to the U.S. institutional and advisory defined contribution, 403(b) plan, and IRA, Digital Solutions, and high net worth lines of business, including product initiatives, regulatory developments and all ERISA matters. The team also provides legal support to the various Compliance teams on ERISA matters.  The team supports the LifeSmart target date funds. In addition, the team provides legal support for the Franklin Templeton 401(k) plan, including Plan Committee meetings, drafting Plan Committee governance documents (e.g., committee charters and guidelines), drafting committee minutes, plan amendments and restatements, independent fiduciary agreements, vendor RFPs, and M&A related matters for the plan.

Currently, the team is working with various recordkeepers and technology partners to make the Franklin Templeton Goals Optimization Engine (“GOE,” a managed account solution) available to defined contribution plan sponsors and their plan participants. GOE provides personalized investment advice to retirement plan participants based on information provided by the participants. We are also preparing for the launch of several new CITs.

Team Culture:

The Legal Department works closely with many groups within the business on projects and initiatives, including new lines of business, product development and distribution capabilities.

The department also collaborates with Compliance to ensure the business is operating in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The team prides itself on working collaboratively with each other in order to find optimal solutions to novel issues presented.   

A Legal Department intern can expect to learn:

  • How a Corporate Legal Department functions and supports other business departments
  • Matters relating to Board of Directors/Committee meetings
  • Legal disclosure requirements/documents applicable to the investment management industry

Key Responsibilities Can Include:

  • Assisting with contracts and contract amendments
  •  Drafting Board/Committee resolutions and minutes
  •  Legal/regulatory research

Compensation Range: This is a full-time internship where students will work approximately 35 hours per week and earn competitive hourly pay of $30 USD per hour. There are several factors taken into consideration in making compensation decisions including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
