Position Information


Serving the public through reliable legal support.


The Department of the Corporation Counsel (COR) is seeking a detail-oriented Legal Clerk III to support attorneys handling litigation and other legal matters on behalf of the City. In this role, you will perform a variety of independent legal clerical duties, including preparing legal documents, maintaining case records, coordinating court activities, and assisting attorneys with case preparation. Your organizational skills and attention to detail will help ensure legal documents, filings, and case records are processed accurately and on time.


What You Will Do

  • Prepare and process a variety of legal documents, forms, correspondence, and related materials used in legal proceedings.

  • Maintain and organize case files and legal records in electronic and hard copy formats.

  • Track assigned cases, maintain court calendars, and coordinate deadlines and court appearances for attorneys.

  • File or e-file legal documents with the courts and compile materials needed for court proceedings.

  • Research case files and gather information needed by attorneys and legal staff.

  • Process claims filed against the City and prepare related correspondence and documentation.

NOTE: The Legal Clerk positions are clerical and may be eligible for promotional opportunities to the Supervising Legal Clerk series. However, these classes DO NOT PROGRESS to Law Clerk, Deputy Corporation Counsel, or Deputy Prosecuting Attorney positions.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Three years of clerical experience, two of which must have been progressively responsible legal clerical work experience involving the preparation, typing and processing of a variety of legal forms and documents which required substantive knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms and documents.


APPLICABLE SKILLS NEEDED 

  • Familiarity with legal terminology and the format and purpose of documents used in legal proceedings

  • Understanding of legal processes, procedures, and the various types of court actions and filings

  • Experience with maintaining organized legal filing systems, case files, and records

  • Strong written communication, including proper grammar, spelling, and preparation of legal correspondence and documents

  • Experience using word processing software and computer systems to enter, update, and retrieve case information

  • Attention to detail when reviewing documents and extracting information from legal files and records

  • Clear communication when providing information to attorneys, court personnel, witnesses, and the public

  • Organization and time management to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines

Substitution 
    1. Business school or college-level credits from an accredited college or university will substitute for experience on a month-for-month basis for the required general clerical experience.
    2. Relevant education and training from an accredited college or university in a legal office administration, legal assistance, legal secretary, paralegal, or law program may be used to substitute for some of the required legal clerical experience. The amount of time credited for the substitution will be dependent on the specific program you completed.
Education Verification:  Education information must be listed clearly on your application. As part of the hiring process, you may be asked to furnish documentation to verify your education to move forward for further consideration.

Typing proficiency of 40 or more net wpm:
This class of work requires you to type at 40 or more net words per minute. Your proficiency may be evaluated by the appointing authority as part of the selection/interview process and/or during your probationary period. Failure to meet the proficiency requirement may result in removal from the eligible list and/or termination from appointment.
