Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the District Attorney, the Legal Assistant assists the District Attorney and the Deputy District Attorney with managing schedules, coordinating meetings and travel, answering phones, and communicating with clients.  Provides administrative assistance to legal staff in the office, including the use of office systems, Administers the case management system, LEDS Representative, filing protocols and docket procedures.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Handle the office functions and procedures of the District Attorney's office.
  • Provide administrative support for the District Attorney.
  • Manage schedules, including trial dates and hearings.
  • Ability to draft morning affidavits, and court orders for attorney review and filings.
  • Karpel Administrator in charge of maintenance; searches; importing court events, reports; daily event entries; reports; grand jury entry; sentencing data entry; discovery entry; and discovery fee collection and deposit with finance department.
  • Agency administrator with Law Enforcement Data Systems LEDS.
  • Collect reports from various police agencies and the various Sheriff’s Departments.
  • Create and maintain files for all violations, misdemeanors and felony cases.
  • Prepare documents relating to charges, sentencing, show cause, warrants and subpoenas.
  • Process and facilitate all transports, detainers and extraditions.
  • Prepare type and file legal documents and files with appropriate Courts.
  • Assist with trial preparation as requested.
  • Ability to manage and maintain sensitive and confidential information.
  • Basic knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of the judicial system.
  • Create and maintain reminders for subpoenas, motion deadlines and all other time sensitive processes.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Respond to informational inquiries from the public, agencies and organizations.
  • Distribute mail.
  • Oversee the office supplies and materials.
  • Maintain inventory of office supplies and materials.
  • Order supplies and materials as needed.
  • Submit and sign claims for payment.
  • Maintain inventory of office equipment.
  • Maintain and monitor department budgets.
  • Answer main phone line.
  • Respond to the public, in person, on the phone and in writing in a professional, courteous and helpful manner.
  • Calculate mileage and fees to be paid to subpoenaed victims and witnesses.
  • Create and maintain all dockets.
  • Maintain the Morrow County Law Library.
  • Generate a variety of reports required of the District Attorney’s office.
  • Schedule and facilitate the logistical aspects of the Grand Jury.
  • Submit pay applications to the County Accountant for payment.
  • Summon individuals chosen by the Circuit Court Clerk who are to be seated on the Grand Jury.
  • Generate schedule of cases to be heard by the Grand Jury.
  • Assist the District Attorney in preparing the indictments for the signature of the Grand Jury Foreman and District Attorney, in needed.
  • Process pay applications for expenses and fess for expert witnesses and other individuals involved in subpoena.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, the public, law enforcement agencies, court staff and defense attorneys.
  • Performs related duties as assigned to meet business needs.
