Duties
Provides clinical and administrative leadership, education, and oversight to institution executive staff and health services clinical and administrative staff for issues related to pharmaceutical care. Ensure the delivery of pharmaceutical care services in accordance with the Bureau of Prisons treatment guidelines, national formulary, national policy, established standards of practice, federal law, and scopes of practice consistent with licensure. Develops and monitors the pharmacy orientation program for new institution Chief Pharmacists to ensure a working knowledge of policy and procedures related to pharmacy and medication processing and prescribing. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements: Basic Requirements: Education: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, Ph.D., Pharm.D. OR equivalent doctoral degree. AND Licensure: Applicants also must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. NOTE: ALL applicants MUST upload proof of current, active and unrestricted license for verification at the time you apply. AND Experience: Applicant’s qualifications background must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary to perform the work of the position. Pharmacy work requires knowledge of the use, clinical effects, and composition of medications, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties. Qualifying professional pharmacy experience may involve, but is not limited to: Dispensing medications prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and providing information to health practitioners and patients about proper usage of medications and side effects; Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations; Performing administrative, consultative, or staff advisory work for a medical facility’s pharmacy program; Planning, monitoring and evaluating medication programs or regimens; Establishing medication-handling procedures for the storage and preservation of medications; Researching medical literature and/or clinical medication information to provide accurate responses to inquiries; and/or Maintaining all medication records required by law. All qualified referred candidates will undergo a credentialing process prior to employment with the Bureau of Prisons. This process includes validation of examinations, licensure, education, internship and residency. Experience: You must have at least one year of professional pharmacy experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled. Some examples of experience are: Experience providing oversight and mentoring to institution Chief Pharmacist at the institution level. Experience in ensuring the delivery of pharmaceutical care services are in accordance with Bureau of Prisons treatment guidelines, national formulary, national policy, established standards of practice, federal law and scopes of practice consistent with licensure. Experience and professional knowledge plus thorough in depth understanding of the relationship and application of basic sciences underlying pharmaceutical care as it relates to the medication and administrative problems. Experience in assisting and conducting quality assurance reviews, staff assists, and technical assistance visits. Medical Requirement: Must be able to distinguish basic colors. If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid work experience.
