Reports to: Deputy Bureau Chief, Pre-Trial Division

Grade/Step: AYS 102

Salary: $179,923 Salary is provided by law; however, individual compensation is based on various factors unique to each candidate, including skill set, years and quality of experience. Any salary offered is determined by the Chief of Staff and is non-negotiable.

Position Description: The Criminal Prosecutions Bureau of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office is seeking a Deputy Supervisor in the Felony Review Unit to lead teams of ASAs in the Felony Review Unit. The Deputy Supervisor will be responsible for the oversight of all Felony Review Unit Activities. This is a full-time bargaining unit exempt position.

Working Environment & Reporting Structure: The Felony Review Unit Deputy Supervisor will report directly to the Supervisor of the Felony Review Unit as well as the Chief and Pre-Trial Deputy Chief of the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau.

Duties/Requirements: The duties of the Deputy Supervisor, Felony Review Unit, involve the day-to-day operations and management of the unit. The Deputy Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of all ASAs within the unit, which includes the training of new line ASAs and Trial Supervisors, daily Crimes review of all unit activity, statement reviews, and regular assessment of the development and progress of all ASAs. The Deputy Supervisor is also responsible for the authorization of Grand Jury subpoenas, pen registers, and warrants requested by law enforcement regarding ongoing investigations. Deputy Supervisors take on call shifts for the purposes of consulting on Murder investigations, Reckless Homicide/Agg DUI investigations, and any other matters referred to the Deputy Supervisors by the Trial Supervisors or line ASAs. All consultations follow the Deputy Supervisor until a charging decision has been made.

Felony Review Deputy Supervisors may be assigned to one of three geographical areas: the city of Chicago, the northern suburbs (Districts 2, 3, and 4), or the southern suburbs (Districts 5 and 6). Although a Felony Review Deputy Supervisor will be assigned primarily to cases arising from one of these three geographic areas, they will be expected to assist fellow Deputy Supervisors in other geographical areas.

The Supervisor shall be an effective advocate and emissary of the mission, vision and values of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office both with ASAs as well as criminal justice stakeholders and partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to manage the needs of junior attorneys, including caseload management, training, and support junior attorneys in pursing long-term development opportunities.
  • Must consistently observe and review the work of attorneys, at all levels, to offer productive feedback and motivate ongoing improvements.
  • Must have strong analytical, writing and oral advocacy skills; advanced case law and statutory knowledge in criminal law and procedure; and must serve as a personal and professional resource and thought partner to junior attorneys and colleagues.
  • Must consistently demonstrate sound judgment, critical thinking, dedication to work product, and effective time management, while also supporting junior attorneys in doing so.
  • Must uphold the mission, vision, and values of the Office at all times and support junior attorneys in doing the same.
  • Must exercise integrity and decorum in all situations.

  • Must have completed one tour as a Trial Supervisor in the Felony Review Unit.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 years of litigation experience in criminal law with significant experience handling First Degree Murder prosecutions.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate others.

Physical Requirements: Light work. Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be very little, a job is in this category when it requires a good deal of walking or standing, or when it involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. To be considered capable of performing a full or wide range of light work, you must have the ability to do substantially all these activities. If someone can do light work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary work, unless there are additional limiting factors such as loss of fine dexterity or inability to sit for long periods of time.
