Job Description

NMILC is seeking a Legal Administrative Assistant who will provide comprehensive administrative support to the Survivor of Crime Program, ensuring efficient legal case management and client service. This role is based in Albuquerque and involves a blend of legal administrative duties, client communication, document management, and collaboration with attorneys and program staff.


Key Responsibilities

  • Catalog and log client documents in Legal Server and related systems.
  • Communicate with potential clients regarding case status and collect necessary information.
  • Prepare and file legal documents such as FOIAs, IPRAs, and background checks.
  • Manage both physical and electronic case files, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail for legal representatives and clients.
  • Assist with calendaring important deadlines and hearings, sending calendar invitations as needed.
  • Support attorneys with case preparation, including drafting letters, organizing files, and updating databases.
  • Provide administrative support such as answering phones, responding to inquiries, and assisting with large-scale print and mailing jobs.
  • Translate documents between Spanish and English as required.
  • Develop and maintain training materials for new staff on file management procedures.
  • Participate in special projects, trainings, and presentations as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience.
  • Fluency or advanced proficiency in Spanish (required).
  • Commitment to advocating for indigent immigrant clients and supporting the organization’s mission of diversity and inclusion.
  • Comfortable working with individuals with criminal convictions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects in a high-volume environment.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks and work independently under pressure.
  • High ethical standards and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must pass federal and state background checks.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; travel required.
  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency with office applications and case management systems.

Preferred Experience

  • 6 months to 1 year of relevant office experience.
  • Experience in immigration rights, human rights, criminal justice, or nonprofit legal services.
  • Familiarity with Legal Server or similar case management databases.
  • Advocacy work with immigrant, LGBTQ, or trauma survivor populations is a plus

Compensation and Benefits

  • Starting Rate: $22.00/hour (full-time, non-exempt), with upward adjustments for additional relevant experience.
