Job Description

Job Summary:

Responsible for providing legal and compliance advice, counsel and recommendations to executives and management across the organization related to matters of various complexity (basic to intermediate), which have or may have a sizable financial impact on business activities and operations. Performs as a subject matter expert on investigations and third-party compliance, keeping current on legal developments, enforcement guidance and trends, industry activities and other emerging trends. Able to support and lead the design, implementation, and management of the organization’s third-party due diligence and exclusion/debarment policies and procedures that incorporate applicable legal standards. Partners with a variety of stakeholders to embed third-party requirements and controls into projects, agreements and business processes. Responds to inquiries from business regarding third party compliance requirements applicable to activities including assistance with transactions. Supports or leads complex internal investigations and resulting remediation, including coordination of multiple internal stakeholders, outside counsel, outside forensic auditors and other experts. Works with the Government Relations team and business to provide guidance regarding appropriate interactions with government officials and healthcare providers. Maintains up-to-date expertise, skills and competency regarding evolving laws, regulations, guidance, directives and enforcement that impacts the organization’s business dealings.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Implements legal strategy for an assigned division to support its long-term business goals and objectives
  • Review and prepare legal documents prior to presentation to management for execution to ensure accurate expression of the legal content.
  • Collaborates with the business units that she or he serves to achieve corporate objectives and mitigate unnecessary business risk
  • Research legal principles and precedents, engage and manage outside counsel, draft legal documents, gather relevant case related information using multiple sources and methods, provide work guidance to other professional, paraprofessional and support staff in developing solutions to problems presented
  • Provides review and counsel relating to business courtesies, gifts and hospitality
  • Manage system and process for third party due diligence screening against sanctions, addressing identified concerns, and ensuring ongoing risk monitoring and mitigation.
  • Maintain currency and fluency in the legal and business trends that could impact those business units within Walgreens that it serves
  • Manage program with third party vendor to screen team members for exclusion/debarment screening as required by OIG guidance
  • Provide support and guidance to corporate functions including Finance, HR, Procurement, IT, Government Affairs and Supply Chain
  • Provide compliance support and guidance to corporate functions including Finance, HR, Procurement, IT, Government Affairs and Supply Chain
  • Leads a staff of legal/compliance professionals and develops employees through on-boarding, open communication and training. Builds and maintains employee morale and motivation; ensures the team is appropriately staffed with required competencies.

The actual salary an employee can expect to receive, plus bonus pursuant to the terms of any bonus plan if applicable, will depend on experience, seniority, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.   • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and at least six (6) years post-bar attorney legal work experience within a corporation and/or private law practice.
  • Required licensure to practice law in at least one state or the District of Columbia.
  • Required Illinois bar membership or active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Experience using time management skills such as prioritizing/organizing and tracking details and meeting deadlines of multiple projects with varying completion dates.
  • Knowledge of U.S. health care compliance regulations including Fraud, Waste and Abuse.
  • Experience supporting compliance and/or legal issues for a healthcare organization.
  • Experience developing and/or executing legal strategies for the business.
  • At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
  • At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to/at least 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).


  • Experience supporting a retail pharmacy business.
  • Experience managing third-party due diligence and screening programs.
  • Experience with anti-bribery and anti-corruption legal issues.
