Job Description

Summer Internship opportunities are available to active students only. To be eligible for a summer internship, students must be graduating after August 8, 2025, or continuing their education.

The Summer Internship begins on Monday, May 19, 2025 and ends on Friday, August 8, 2025.

The South Florida Water Management District’s Office of Counsel is seeking a rising second-year law school student interested in environmental or government law for an in-person summer internship starting on May 19, 2025, and ending on August 8, 2025. This paid internship position will provide mentoring and practical hands-on experience. The intern will assist District attorneys with various legal assignments and projects, including conducting legal research and drafting and reviewing legal documents.  This position is only open to law school students who will have completed their first year of law school by May 2025. The position will not be open to first and third-year law students.

Internship Description:
The intern will undertake legal research and write legal memoranda, opinions, court filings, and other documents. Assignments frequently involve deadlines and complex factual and legal issues related to administrative, environmental, or other areas of government law or litigation. The District places a premium on careful, accurate, and self-directed work but will ensure that staff attorneys are responsible for supervising the work done and providing meaningful feedback. Attendance at client meetings, court appearances, and meetings with the public and agency representatives may also be a part of the internship experience.

Education/Experience Guide:
To be considered for an internship, the candidate must have a bachelor’s degree and be currently enrolled as a full-time student seeking a Juris Doctor at a college or university. You must also have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale). Completion of at least one administrative law class and/or at least one environmental law course as an undergraduate or law student is preferred.

Graduate and Doctoral Level: Interns will be paid $19/hour and work a maximum of 32 hours per week for a maximum internship duration of 4 months.

License(s) / Certification(s):
A valid State of Florida Driver’s License is not required.

No professional licensure is required for this position.

Interns are not authorized to drive District vehicles, operate District boats, ATVs, forklifts, or any heavy equipment.

Veterans’ Preference:
Pursuant to Chapter 295, Florida Statutes, candidates eligible for Veterans’ Preference will receive preference in employment for vacancies and are encouraged to apply.  Candidates claiming Veterans’ Preference must attach supporting documentation with each submission that includes character of service (for example, DD Form 214 Member Copy #4) along with any other documentation as required by Rule 55A-7, Florida Administrative Code.  All documentation is due by the close of the job posting.

The South Florida Water Management District is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in the selection process, please contact the Human Resources Bureau at HR_Solutions@sfwmd.gov
