Job Description

This is a full-time position with the Office of Legal Counsel at the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, D.C. Closing Date: Friday, 03/06/2026, 11:59 PM ET Please note that this vacancy has a limit of 200 applicants. Duties

The Supreme Court's Staff Counsel assists the Legal Counsel in providing assistance to the Supreme Court Justices on a variety of case-related issues and legal services to the Supreme Court as an institution. Staff Counsel provides the Justices with advice on various motions, petitions arising under the Court's original jurisdiction, petitions for rehearing, and bar admissions and attorney discipline. Staff Counsel provides legal services to the Supreme Court, including on administration and governance, appropriations, budget issues, contracts, employment matters, ethics and compliance, intellectual property issues, legislation, litigation, police and security matters, proposed rule amendments, and special projects. The position does not entail working with the Justices on the Court's opinions. The successful candidate is expected to commit to work at the Court for at least two years.

Qualifications

Attorney with excellent analytical, research, and writing skills. Demonstrated ability to perform high quality legal work with minimum supervision and within specified time limits is required. A minimum of three to four years practice experience preferably including federal and constitutional law. Must be an active member in good standing admitted to practice in the highest court of a State, Commonwealth, Territory or Possession, or the District of Columbia. Experience with appellate courts particularly helpful.

Education A law degree from an accredited law school.
