Tenant Organizer 

Affirmative Litigation

 (Full-Time, Non-exempt Position) 

Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm located in the Skid Row neighborhood of Los Angeles. We are looking for extraordinary people to help us end homelessness in Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC fights for justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people who are disabled or experiencing homelessness, people living with HIV/AIDS, and homeless veterans. 

Position Description: ICLC seeks a highly-motivated Tenant Organizer who will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and building tenant and building outreach for the purposes of meeting team contract requirements. Tenant organizers will work collaboratively on REAP and Affirmative Litigation case assignments. The overall scope of responsibilities related to buildings includes visiting substandard units/buildings throughout Los Angeles County, interviewing potential clients, providing education and information to tenants, conducting tenant meetings both in the field and at ICLC, working closely with the Tenant Organizing Manager and as part of the Affirmative Litigation Team. 

The Tenant Organizer is responsible for delivering on the REAP (Rent Account Escrow Program) contract with the City of Los Angeles and working closely with the Affirmative Litigation team in the handling and following up on all potential slum litigation cases. The Tenant Organizer works on Affirmative Litigation cases from initial contact to preparing the files for litigation. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Works directly with the Affirmative Litigation team to pursue all slum building outreach, which are identified through multiple sources and referrals to ICLC and ensure excellent and detailed follow up and documentation per ICLC systems regarding referrals, maintains and complies with all internal systems and documents all efforts in conjunction with the Affirmative Litigation team. 

  • Works with Affirmative Litigation team after new clients/buildings are assigned from timely initial contact, through litigation ready including all client intakes, factual questionnaires and all necessary documents are executed and received; pro-actively suggest and recommend possible buildings/tenants for review. 

  • Deliver on team’s canvassing plans to efficiently identify and bring in cases, which includes client contact and follow up, building site inspection, initially and with experts, comprehensive photography and documentation of buildings, obtaining information from relevant public agencies regarding the buildings, supporting  clients in making complaints, where warranted, to the appropriate City or County agency, documenting and ensuring the team complies with all documentation, communication and details required for both the REAP and the litigation cases, doing whatever is necessary to advocate for the clients and obtaining documentation and information regarding their case. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including databases and file management. Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Minimum of three years of community organizing. Must be fluent in Spanish both written and verbal. Must have valid California Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation to conduct job-related responsibilities. 

Compensation: Hourly compensation from $24.04 - $36.36 per hour and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits.
