The Compliance Attorney plays a critical role in protecting the firm and its clients by analyzing and resolving conflicts of interest, identifying potential ethical and business risks and ensuring compliance with professional responsibility rules and firm policies. They will work closely with the Risk Management Department, the Office of General Counsel, Conflicts and New Business teams, firm attorneys and the Information Security Team to navigate sophisticated conflicts issues while supporting the efficient opening of new clients/matters and the onboarding of new lateral partners. The Compliance Attorney will conduct conflict searches, work with internal stakeholders and resolve complex conflict issues for lateral partner candidates; draft, review and negotiate engagement agreements and Outside Counsel Guidelines with firm partners, clients and vendors; guide the Conflicts and New Business teams in applying ethical rules, firm policies and procedures; and assist with various other projects as designated by the Office of General Counsel.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Collaborate with the Office of General Counsel, Risk Management Department, Conflicts and New Business teams and Information Security team to manage conflicts of interest, ethical and business risks, and ensure compliance with applicable ethical rules and firm policies.
Conduct conflict searches; identify, analyze and propose resolutions of conflicts of interest and other ethical and business risks; support the efficient opening of new clients/matters and the onboarding of new lateral partners.
Draft, review and negotiate Outside Counsel Guidelines, engagement agreements and conflict waivers with firm partners, clients and vendors, while ensuring compliance with ethical rules and firm policies.
Liaise with key internal stakeholders and provide clear and concise information under strict deadlines.
Meet established productivity and accuracy targets while handling a high volume of workload.
Develop and conduct periodic ethics and risk related training programs for various firm departments.
Participate in continuous improvement of departmental workflows, documentation, and best practices within collaborating teams.
Maintain confidentiality of client information and comply with firm policies regarding data security and document handling.
Apply a strong attention to detail and understanding of legal risk management and contractual concepts.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree, Juris Doctorate and an active law license in good standing in at least one state.
Five to seven years of experience practicing in a large law firm or in-house legal services environment.
Strong understanding of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the ethics rules specific to jurisdictions where the firm has an office.
Strong understanding of contract principles. Specific knowledge of and experience working with Outside Counsel Guidelines and Engagement Letters strongly preferred.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify and resolve complex conflicts of interest and ethical and business risks, while ensuring compliance with professional responsibility rules and firm policies.
Experience working with legal conflicts databases preferred.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines with a customer focused mindset.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with all levels of an organization.
Appreciation for the confidential nature of information and ability to disseminate similar obligations to others throughout the firm.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
The expected salary range for this position is $130,000 - $160,000. Final compensation will be determined based on several factors, including but not limited to, relevant experience, qualifications, skill set, and geographic location.
