Job Description

  Position Available:
Bilingual Outreach Worker

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE) is a nonprofit law firm established over 50 years ago to ensure that the most vulnerable people in our communities have the same access to justice as people and companies that can afford to retain an attorney.

About the Position
More than 30,000 agricultural workers and family members work in Ohio yearly. They work with many hand-harvest crops, including cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, radishes, and peppers. They also work in packing sheds, grading stations, nurseries, greenhouses, and food processing plants. Agricultural workers encounter legal problems arising from violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, and other federal and state protective statutes, as well as problems with taxes, immigration, environmental hazards, sexual harassment, government benefits, housing, domestic violence, civil rights, education, and other issues. The Outreach Workers are an integral part of the outreach team and help us reach as many agricultural workers as possible during the busiest part of the year.

Position Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Outreach Workers is to visit agricultural housing/labor camps in Ohio during the evening hours to inform workers about our services and their rights and accept applications for legal assistance. Additional duties include community legal education, investigation and research, and other work assigned by ABLE advocates. This is a full-time, temporary position from mid-May 2025 through mid-August 2025, with a possible extension. Two outreach workers will be based in ABLE's Toledo office, and one outreach worker will be based in ABLE’s Dayton office.

Qualifications
We are looking for people committed to social justice for agricultural workers who are fluent in Spanish, have excellent organizational and writing skills, can relate well with under-resourced clients and community groups, are computer proficient, and have a strong commitment to the rule of law. ABLE will provide training and daily supervision by experienced staff, including attorneys, paralegals, and outreach coordinators. Outreach Workers must have a valid driver’s license, be insurable, and have access to an automobile. ABLE generally will have a car available for outreach, but Outreach Workers occasionally may need to use their own vehicles. ABLE will reimburse authorized travel expenses.

Compensation
$22.50 per hour

Employee Status
Non-Exempt, 30-40 hours per week

Location
The position is in-person in Toledo or Dayton. It requires daytime, evening, and occasional weekend work and travel, and it may require overnight trips.
