Job Description

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Paralegal is part of defense operations —the division of MagMutual devoted to defending MagMutual’s PolicyOwners in medical malpractice lawsuits and medical licensing matters. This role is responsible for a variety of duties to support trial attorneys in the representation of healthcare providers and entities.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Provide support to trial attorneys through traditional paralegal work during the investigation, discovery, and trial of medical malpractice lawsuits and medical board matters.
  • Handle daily case management and administration.
  • Track and organize files.
  • Draft discovery and pleadings.
  • Perform investigative research on parties and experts.
  • Review medical records and compile chronologies.
  • Handle court filings and monitor dockets.
  • Schedule depositions and client meetings and manage attorney calendars.
  • Assist attorneys in preparation for meetings, court events, depositions, and trials.
  • Oversee subpoenas and other aspects of written discovery.
  • Utilize case management software and record retrieval vendors.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • 1-2+ years of prior medical malpractice experience.
  • Paralegal certificate required.
  • Familiarity with laws, legal procedures and protocols, and local court system.
  • Courtroom exposure a plus.
  • Knowledge of defense work required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer literacy and satisfactory knowledge of daily operations of a legal office.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, think independently, handle multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity and experience working with case management software.
  • Familiarity and experience working with record retrieval vendors.
  • Ability to project a professional demeanor at all times.
  • High degree of confidentiality.
