As our new Corporate IP Attorney, you will be responsible for prosecuting and defending the Company’s patents, trademarks and copyrights. In addition, you will oversee Sensient's trade secret and NDA program, as well as advise R&D teams on patentability and freedom to operate.
In this role, you will be office-based in one of our following locations: Milwaukee, WI / Hofman Estates, IL / Somerset, NJ / St Louis, MO, and you will report to the Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary.
What you will do:
- Advise General Counsel, Management, and R&D teams on all IP law matters
- Assess the patentability of new ideas and innovations, including conducting white space analyses and drafting freedom to operate opinion letters
- Prosecute (with outside counsel) the Company’s patent, trademark, and copyright applications
- Review potential infringements of the Company’s IP, work with outside litigation counsel to bring cases against infringers and defend Sensient against infringement claims
- Closely supervising outside counsel
- Draft and negotiate intellectual property licensing agreements as well as joint development contracts
- Oversee Sensient's trade secret protection program, including negotiating NDAs with vendors and trade partners
- Work with in house and outside attorneys to handle all IP aspects of acquisitions and divestitures;
- Review incoming employment and confidentiality agreements to ensure no potential violations of other parties’ IP
- Advise the Scientific Advisory Committee on IP legal matters
- Participate in the Company’s Chemical Risk Strategy
- Conduct training programs for staff and the Board of Directors
What you will bring:
- A JD degree from an accredited law school, with a license to practice law in the United States
- An undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field
- 2-4 years of experience as a patent attorney and ideally admitted to the USPTO Patent Bar
- Highly developed written and oral communications skills, with the ability to clearly articulate recommendations and options about complex legal issues - also in plain English language to non-lawyers
- Excellent management skills and business judgment with a capacity to make decisions
- An understanding of overall business objectives and the risks/rewards of each situation to provide sound, practical counsel
- Proactive initiative taker, aiming to get the job done with minimal direction
