Job Description

The Position



The City of Beaverton is seeking an Assistant City Attorney 1 to join the City Attorney’s Office prosecution team. This is an entry-level position that is responsible for prosecuting criminal and non-criminal cases in the Beaverton Municipal Court. The Assistant City Attorney 1 also provides legal advice and training to officers of the Beaverton Police Department. Applicants must have a demonstrated interest or experience as a prosecutor or criminal defense attorney in Oregon.


This is a full-time, exempt, Management 2 (M2) position. There is one vacancy. Due to the sensitive nature of the work, a thorough background investigation will be conducted after a conditional job offer is made.

Responsibilities

  • Prosecute criminal and non-criminal cases predominately in the Beaverton Municipal Court.
    • Review police reports and charge appropriate offenses.
    • Interview witnesses and victims orally and in writing, and prepare them to testify at trial or other proceedings.
    • Communicate with judges, court staff, attorneys, and clients. 
    • Negotiate appropriate case dispositions.
    • Prepare motions and responses to motions. 
    • Research and write legal memoranda. 
    • Argue motions, preserve legal error, try cases before a court or jury, and represent the city at sentencing hearings.
    • Coordinate responses to discovery requests, public record requests, and subpoenas duces tecum. 
    • Use the electronic case management system.
  • Communicate legal advice and provide training to police officers regarding the enforcement of criminal laws in Oregon.
  • Represent the city in court and administrative hearings. 
  • Create a workplace that promotes the organizational values of workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Contribute to a positive and supportive work environment with a culture of teamwork and communication.
  • Additional duties are outlined in the Assistant Attorney 1 class specification. The salary range on the class specification will be updated after July 1, 2025, to reflect a Cost-Of-Living Adjustment of 5%.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Law degree from a fully accredited law school; or 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.


Licensing and special requirements

  • Membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar. 
  • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification, and satisfy the requirements of a background check, including Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) fingerprints.
  • Ability to satisfy the requirements of a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Within 30 days of hire the successful candidate will be required to receive CJIS certification.

Compensation

Salary range: $7,350.42 - $9,851.26 monthly*

Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.

* Salary range includes a 5% Cost-of-Living Adjustment approved by Beaverton City Council, that will be effective July 1, 2025. Exact rates may vary slightly due to rounding calculations in the payroll system.
