Description

General Summary:
Respond to and investigate death scenes to determine if the death falls under within the mediocolegal jurisdiction of Brazos County for the Forensic Services Department; provide on scene and telephonic death investigation for the Forensic Services Department.

Essential Duties:
Respond to scenes physically and/or telephonically to investigate reports of death, talk to and interview pertinent individuals, photograph and record postmortem findings on or around the body at the scene; conduct extensive follow-up investigate activities about the death; respond to Department phone line 24 hours a day while on-call; Communicate with families, funeral homes and law enforcement as needed for cases; may include notifying families of death.  Prepares reports for all death scene investigations prior to examination of the body and documents and records property and evidentiary items at the scene.  Obtain hospital, police, and Justice of the Peace records and other documents and specimens from hospitals pertaining to the death investigations such as subpoenas and writs of attachments.  Testify in court regarding investigate report from the death scenes.

Required: 1 – 3 years’ experience in death investigations required

Required:  Requires certification through the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators required withing 2 years of hire

Typical: Working knowledge of digital cameras, computers, tablet/laptop and scanner/printer


Work Environment    
Typical: Usually in a comfortable environment but with regular exposure to factors causing moderate physical discomfort from such things as dust, fumes or odors. Requires sitting standing, walking stooping, climbing kneeling reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.  There is also frequent exposure to blood/body fluids or potentially infectious material or other hazardous material.
