Job Description

Purpose of the Job

The purpose of this position is to facilitate the justice process by conducting investigations and providing support during trials.

This position conducts investigations into a wide variety of criminal and civil cases that are handled by the Gila County Attorney’s Office. Duties include coordinating and managing security for victims and other witnesses at trial, assisting prosecutors, collecting and coordinating evidence for use in trials and providing testimony in court.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES


This position does not supervise other employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

TIME SPENT

  • ·Conducts criminal and civil investigations; provides technical and investigative assistance to other agencies on major cases; provides assistance to other jurisdictions, including State and Federal law enforcement agencies, and works as liaison officer between law enforcement officers and departmental staff; and conducts internal investigations within agency or for others at request of Gila County Attorney or that person's designee, as needed.

  • Assists with courtroom security to ensure the safety of witnesses and the public; provides armed security for staff during courtroom proceedings and daily office operations as needed.

  • Testifies in court as expert witness in specialized field of investigations, as needed.

  • Staffs, analyzes, conducts research and makes recommendations on information that will assist prosecutors.

  • Assists prosecutors with jury trials and preparations; serves subpoenas on witnesses, victims, officers and records that will be used in trial; coordinates and handles evidence at prosecutors' direction; coordinates and safely transports evidence from multiple agencies and to trial, and assists Clerk of Court to properly dispose of evidence when case becomes adjudicated; and conducts background investigation on all parties involved in criminal proceedings.

BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no responsibility over any types of budget.

PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides project resource allocation on pre-approved resources involving technology projects.

ORAL COMMUNICATION DUTIES

This position trains colleagues, explains County procedures or processes, responds to public inquiries and conducts meetings.

WRITTEN COMMUNICATION DUTIES

This position creates or edits documents, internal memos, emails, formal letters and reports.

INTERACTIONS WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC

Interacts extensively with employees, customers, the general public, vendors, regulatory bodies and other groups and/or individuals and Institutions over the telephone, by email, and/or in person.

INTERACTIONS SPECIFICALLY WITH CUSTOMERS

Minimum Education/Directly Related Experience Required

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

Associates Degree.

MINIMUM YEARS OF DIRECTLY RELATED EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Five (5) years experience.

PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS REQUIRED

AZ Post Certification, Field Training Officer, Criminal Investigations Certification.


Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Occasionally stands to attend to customers and to attend to reported incidents. 
  • Regularly sits to complete report and operate computers; routinely sits to operate special equipment, complete a program and to attend to other duties; rarely sits to attend to reception areas.
  • Routinely lifts upwards of 75 lbs. of work related materials, equipment or tools.
  • Occasionally requires dexterity for peacekeeping tools; routinely requires dexterity for keyboard operation; rarely requires dexterity for special gadgets.
  • Incumbents in this position may be required to intervene to break citizen altercations, occasionally walk, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel and twist.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Incumbents in this position routinely spends time in office environment; occasionally spends time in outdoor areas, library and automobile; rarely spends time in tight spaces.

SAFETY RISK EXPOSURE

Incumbents in this position are subject to physical danger such as dangerous vehicles, gun shots and physical attacks; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, drugs, infectious and communicable diseases; mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, blood-borne pathogens, communicable diseases, fire hazards, explosives, respiratory hazards, extreme temperature, noise and vibration, wetness and humidity; subject to extended periods of intense concentration in review of crime scenes, investigations and preparing law enforcement reports.

Occasionally, incumbents in this position may become exposed to verbal abuse by customers or citizens either in-person or through telephone.

PROTECTIVE GEAR & SAFETY MANUALS

Incumbents in this position are required to constantly follow written safety procedures and manuals relevant to the division or department. 


Incumbents in this position may routinely require insulated electrical gloves; require flame resistant clothings; regularly requires safety foot wear; constantly require compliance devices; occasionally require hearing protection devices and eye protection devices.

CONSEQUENCES OF ERROR

Potential errors can result in unfavorable public perceptions and legal ramifications. 

SPECIFIC EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

Must be a US citizen and with no felony convictions; must successfully complete a background check as well as medical, polygraph, psychological examinations prior to being appointed; must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.
