The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board (FRTIB) is looking for a highly qualified and motivated individual to serve as a Volunteer Law Student. This Job Opportunity Announcement (JOA) may be used to fill other Volunteer Law Student positions within the FRTIB in the same geographical location with the same qualifications.
DutiesThe FRTIB is filling a Student Volunteer Legal Internship for Summer 2026. This position is expected to begin at the end of May or early June and will extend through the summer. In rare situations, this internship may be extended. As a volunteer law student, you will:
- assist with a variety of independent legal research and drafting of legal memorandum;
- assist with conducting in-depth legal research in the areas of pension, tax, administrative law, privacy, procurement, benefits, investments, and loan activities;
- assist attorneys with drafting motions, petitions, and briefs in preparation of meeting and conferences;
- assist with the legal analysis of court orders to determine whether they meet FRTIB's statutory and regulatory requirements;
- assist in the review of contractual agreements and other documents for legal sufficiency;
- review and apply policies, procedures and regulations in order to provide responses to inquiries;
- assist with the review of a variety of legal cases; and
- analyze factual and legal issues to determine which facts are pertinent and which legal sources are applicable.

- Must maintain student eligibility for the duration of the internship.
- Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background suitability investigation.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify for this student volunteer internship, you must meet the below upon completion of the 2025-26 academic year:
- have completed one year of law school; and
- have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher out of a 4.0 scale.

1. Federal Resume Information: Your resume must total no more than TWO (2) pages. Any information submitted in excess of two (2) pages WILL NOT be considered. Be sure the first two pages of your resume clearly show the relevant experience you want us to consider, including the start and end dates for each job (month, day, and year) and the number of hours you worked each week (for example, 40 hours/week). If you submit more than one resume, only the most recent version will be used to evaluate your application.

3. Transcripts and Enrollment Verification - You must provide your transcripts to support your educational claims. Transcripts may be unofficial copies. Transcripts must be legible and possess the school name imprinted on the transcript or be on school letterhead. Transcripts must show you are currently enrolled (e.g., Fall 2025). If your transcripts do not reflect current enrollment (e.g., Fall 2025), you must provide a separate proof of enrollment document or acceptance for enrollment verification. Applications without transcripts/enrollment verification or transcripts without the required information are considered incomplete and will be rated "Ineligible". Official transcripts and proof of continuing education through either the Summer or Fall 2026 semesters will be required if selected. If you are currently enrolled but will complete your degree requirements by May 2026, you must provide proof of continuing education, such as an acceptance letter, prior to appointment.
4. Writing Sample - a 3-5 page writing sample.
