- Job Responsibilities
- Under the Chief General Counsel, instructs Academy personnel and students in legal issues and updates using classroom instruction and teleconferencing format.
- Provide instruction of legal principles to students in Basic Law Enforcement and Basic Detention classes.
- Sit as a hearing officer for law enforcement certification contested case hearings, which are held pursuant to the Administrative Procedures Act and South Carolina Rules of Evidence.
- Write hearing officer recommendations, which will be submitted to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council for review.
- Review content of lesson plans developed by other instructional areas of the Criminal Justice Academy for legal accuracy.
- Prepare and update teaching materials, lesson plans, and test questions to include the presentation of the Annual Legal Update.
- Perform other assignments and projects assigned by the General Counsel.
- Minimum and Additional Requirements
The candidate must hold a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the South Carolina Bar.

- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; interpret and apply laws and judicial decisions.
- Must be familiar with the dynamics of the judicial process and have the personality and experience to work effectively in the classroom.
- Ability to develop lesson plans and conduct comprehensive and professional instruction.
- Trial experience and experience with the State Legislature not prerequisite, but highly advantageous.
- Knowledge of SC Criminal and Civil laws as they relate to law enforcement.
- Knowledge of federal and state constitutional rulings and state court rules of procedure.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and be able to work independently, and as a team, while exercising sound judgement.
- Ability to work holidays, nights, weekend, and travel overnight, on occasion as need.
- A criminal history check and drug screening are required for all new hires.
