- Job Summary
Assists the assigned judge in resolving legal issues and performing research as directed; performs other duties as assigned.
Full salary range for this position is $55,910 - $96,179- Essential Functions
- Researches legal issues as directed;
- Analyzes briefs and case files, making inquiries pertaining to the relevant case;
- Attends court proceedings and assists the judge as requested;
- Aids in the preparation of civil and criminal dockets;
- Drafts judicial opinions;
- Reviews case files ensuring compliance with Maryland laws and Maryland Rules of Procedure;
- Communicates with judge, attorneys, litigants, and courthouse staff about cases;
- Reviews recent laws and briefs the judge of pertinent developments;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government policies and procedures;
- Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Government to the public;
- Knowledge of the law and the preparation of legal documents and materials;
- Ability to effectively communicate with other staff, judges, attorneys, and members of the public;
- Ability to use available resources to research information;
- Ability to keep accurate records;
- Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, and simple office machines;
- Excellent communications and analytical skills.
- Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree;
- Three or more years of related experience; or additional education in a specialized area;
- Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work requires no unusual demand for physical effort.
Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings and training rooms.
