The Counsel provides a full range of legal advice and services. The Counsel work assignments involve moderately complex to complex issues where the analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.

Background - Specialty:  Humana Specialty offers Dental, Vision, Life and Disability Insurance Products to both employer groups and individual members, including Mandatory Supplemental Benefits offered through Humana Medicare Advantage plans.
Responsibilities: The Counsel position will support the day-to-day (non-litigation) legal needs of the Humana Specialty Business area of operations.  This will include a variety of tasks such as legal research, drafting legal documents, assessing risk, building relationships within the organization, hiring outside counsel, and other related duties. The selected candidate will help resolve problems of diverse scope and complexity ranging from moderate to substantial.  


Examples of specific legal work that will be performed include, but are not limited to:


•    Support Specialty Sales and CPC Contracts when submitting responses to Local, State and Federal RFPs as well as provide legal support to defend / protest contract awards;
•    Provide legal advice for state market conduct exams and consent orders;
•    Partner with Regulatory Compliance and Government Affairs to advance Humana’s interests in the Specialty market space;
•    Advise on Specialty strategic initiatives and growth strategies;
•    Provide certificate / policy interpretation of terms and conditions for various product lines;
•    Advise on marketing materials used by the sales teams;
•    Provide Specialty Leadership with risk assessments, analysis and proposed mitigation strategies with regards to potential decisions and initiatives; 
•    Draft and negotiate commercial contracts and vendor agreements for various product lines; and
•    Negotiate and resolve disputes with providers, vendors, contractors, etc. on behalf of Specialty.


The Counsel will also be expected to advise executives to develop functional strategies on matters of significance, exercise independent judgment and decision making on complex issues regarding job duties and related tasks, work under minimal supervision, and use independent judgment requiring analysis of variable factors to determine the best course of action.
 

The Counsel typically a Legal generalist or provides counsel in a combination of disciplines. Begins to influence department’s strategy. Makes decisions on moderately complex to complex issues regarding technical approach for project components, and work is performed without direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments.

Required Qualifications

•    Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school, with active license in good standing in at least one state; 
•    At least 3 to 5 years of experience in health law at a law firm or in-house health care organization; 
•    Experience in Federal and State Procurement processes and contracting or similar regulatory work; 
•    Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills; 
•    Experience negotiating contracts and settlement agreements; 
•    Ability to work both independently under general supervision and within a team; and
•    Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with other attorneys and diverse clients at all levels of the company.
 

Preferred Qualifications

•    Strong provider contracting experience;
•    Familiarity with Medicare Advantage Mandatory Supplemental Benefits;
•    Experience and skill in presenting legal advice to executive teams; and
•    Corporate law or compliance department experience, preferably in ancillary/specialty insurance services.
 

Additional Information

Although role may be remote, candidate is expected to maintain eastern standard time work hours.

Travel: While this is a remote position, occasional travel to Humana's offices for training or meetings may be required.

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.


 

$138,900 - $191,000 per year


 

This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
