
- Class Definition
In any of the four counties and under the supervision of the Policy Associate, the Court Reporter Instructor, shall fulfill the duties and responsibilities of a Court Reporter as well as provide formal training and guidance to newly hired Court Reporters and Electronic Court Reporters. The Court Reporter Instructor shall have a mastery of the principles of court stenography, extensive trial experience in the Rhode Island Superior Court, and an ability to provide stenographic training and transcript review services to newly hired Court Reporters and Electronic Court Reporters.
The Court Reporter Instructor shall have a thorough knowledge of punctuation, grammar, spelling, medical and legal terminology; the ability to take dictation at the rate of a minimum 225 words per minute, type 70 words per minute; apply verbatim reporting skills in the courtroom setting, and the ability to prepare in a timely manner and in proper form all transcripts that are ordered; maintain accurate files and records of work in progress, work completed, and other notes subject to later transcription. Must adapt to Case CATalyst, the computer-aided transcription system used by the Superior Court and shall remain current with Case CATalyst upgrades and technology advancements.
The Court Reporter Instructor, in concert with the Electronic Court Reporter Instructor, will develop and update uniform training materials that will address the court calendar and trial protocols, all aspects of the verbatim record and transcription formatting and production. The Court Reporter Instructor shall be responsible for the review and editing of transcripts of newly hired Court Reporters and Electronic Court Reporters, and the provision of related guidance and instruction to advance the transcript skills of Court Reporters and Electronic Court Reporters. The Court Reporter Instructor shall provide training to Electronic Court Reporters on taking the record in a trial setting via dual reporting in the courtroom; and any and all other related duties as may be assigned by the Presiding Justice of the Superior Court, the Court Administrator, or his/her designee.
- Required Qualifications for Appointment
Graduation from a college of recognized standing or accredited business school or private course of study specializing in stenographic reporting; possession of a Registered Professional Reporter (“RPR”) certificate a plus. Must have at least five (5) years of Rhode Island Superior Court experience as a Court Reporter; ability to command the use of the digital audio recording hardware and software technology; or any combination of the above education and experience.
