Primary Function:
To work with ASAs and other staff assigned to the Gun Crimes Strategies unit, to help design data systems and process that capture, transfer, insight extraction, and operational implementation of information generated within the unit, while also looking for and implementing opportunities to increase public transparency around the work of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office as it relates to Gun Crimes.
Physical Requirements:
Light Work: The position requires the ability to stand or walk frequently, often for extended periods. You may need to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 20 pounds regularly, and occasionally heavier items. The job may also involve a significant amount of walking or standing relative to sedentary roles.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with the ASAs to understand day-to-day operations, current workflow, pain points, and information generation.
- Develop an iterative approach towards data collection and making data more actionable for the unit.
- Manage projects focused on data generated within the unit.
- Utilize and customize multiple technology tools, including developing PowerShell and SQL code.
- Support internal data requests ranging from policy insights to staff management.
- Develop better internal systems around data.
- Assist in the development of data sets and analysis for the public and as well as researchers who are working with the office.
- Provide technical training to individuals both within and outside of the office.
- Interacts regularly with State's Attorney's Office staff
- Interacts with outside agencies
- Regular access to confidential information
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Required:
- The candidate must be organized with high attention to detail, while having the ability to multi-task.
- The candidate must have experience with data management/analysis.
- The candidate must have a solid understanding of multi-relational data structures.
- The candidate must be comfortable working in an iteration-based environment
- The candidate must understand how to design meaningful data visualization
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, PowerShell, R, SQL, STATA, VBA
- The candidate must be able to manipulate large data (100,000+ rows) sets in Microsoft Excel, SQL, R, STATA, or something similar
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, specifically the ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience
Preferred:
- STEM undergraduate/graduate degree or related coursework/educational experience
- Experience building out and maintaining data pipelines/ETL jobs
- Proficiency with data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau
- High level of proficiency in programming, particularly with PowerShell and SQL
- Experience developing workflow systems focused on capturing high-quality data
- An understanding of or experience with criminal law or the criminal justice systems
