This recruitment is being established to obtain a current eligible list for both Full time and Extra-Help vacancies. Extra-Help are not entitled to county benefits and are limited to a maximum of 25 hours per week. Extra-Help pay is $27.35 per hour.
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following
- Performs complex research for cases referred by attorney or law enforcement.
- Makes recommendations for litigation strategy.
- Drafts and prepares legal documents.
- Interviews witnesses.
- Assists in settlement negotiations and motion and trial preparation.
- Assists peace officers/attorneys during investigations.
- Prepares financial profiles and conducts property searches.
- Provides investigative assistance to attorneys in criminal prosecution.
- Assists in grant management; and collects statistical data and prepares reports.
- Performs complex research for cases referred by attorney or law enforcement.
- Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience equivalent to a Legal Assistant with Merced County.
Education:
Completion of a recognized paralegal certificate program which included course work in legal research and writing, evidence, discovery, contracts and torts, civil litigation, and criminal law.- Essential Functions

- Independently perform legal research, develop litigation strategy and draft legal documents.
- Operate a personal computer and other office equipment.
- Analyze data, interpret directions, procedures and regulations, and develop appropriate responses.
- Perform job duties under stressful conditions and respond appropriately to situations.
- Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and County Regulations.
- Train, evaluate and supervise staff.
- Frequent use of depth perception, peripheral vision and color perception.
- Frequently lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects.
- Frequent use of hand-eye coordination.
- Normal dexterity, frequent holding and grasping.
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
- Regular attendance is an essential function.
Knowledge of:- Statutory law (Penal Code, Health and Safety Code, Vehicle Code, Civil Procedures).
- Criminal Law and procedure.
- Civil litigation.
- Court filing and recording procedures.
- Legal ethics.
Ability to:- Interpret and apply statutory and case law.
- Collect, examine and evaluate financial information.
- Understand financial and real property transactions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys and various law enforcement agencies.
- Independently perform legal research, develop litigation strategy and draft legal documents.
