Job Description

Examples of Duties

This recruitment is being established to obtain a current eligible list for both Full time and Extra-Help vacancies.  Extra-Help are not entitled to county benefits and are limited to a maximum of 25 hours per week.  Extra-Help pay is $27.35 per hour.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following
 

  • Performs complex research for cases referred by attorney or law enforcement.
     
  • Makes recommendations for litigation strategy.
     
  • Drafts and prepares legal documents.
     
  • Interviews witnesses.
     
  • Assists in settlement negotiations and motion and trial preparation.
     
  • Assists peace officers/attorneys during investigations.
     
  • Prepares financial profiles and conducts property searches.
     
  • Provides investigative assistance to attorneys in criminal prosecution.
     
  • Assists in grant management; and collects statistical data and prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:
Two (2) years of experience equivalent to a Legal Assistant with Merced County.

Education:
Completion of a recognized paralegal certificate program which included course work in legal research and writing, evidence, discovery, contracts and torts, civil litigation, and criminal law.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

  • Independently perform legal research, develop litigation strategy and draft legal documents.
     
  • Operate a personal computer and other office equipment.
     
  • Analyze data, interpret directions, procedures and regulations, and develop appropriate responses.
     
  • Perform job duties under stressful conditions and respond appropriately to situations.
     
  • Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and County Regulations.
     
  • Train, evaluate and supervise staff.
     
  • Frequent use of depth perception, peripheral vision and color perception.
     
  • Frequently lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects.
     
  • Frequent use of hand-eye coordination.
     
  • Normal dexterity, frequent holding and grasping.
     
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 40 pounds.

  • Regular attendance is an essential function.

Knowledge of: 
  • Statutory law (Penal Code, Health and Safety Code, Vehicle Code, Civil Procedures).
     
  • Criminal Law and procedure.

  • Civil litigation.
     
  • Court filing and recording procedures.
     
  • Legal ethics.

Ability to: 
  • Interpret and apply statutory and case law.
     
  • Collect, examine and evaluate financial information.
     
  • Understand financial and real property transactions.
     
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys and various law enforcement agencies.

Salary
  • $56,888 - $69,201.60/year
