General Counsel
Samaritan Daytop Village provides life-changing services in mental health, addiction recovery, housing, and more to help individuals and families across New York rebuild their lives. We serve over 33,000 clients annually at more than 60 locations throughout the five boroughs, as well as Suffolk, Rockland, Sullivan, Westchester, and Ulster Counties.
As a member of the Executive Team, the General Counsel leads the Legal Department and serves as a key advisor to senior leadership. This role oversees legal operations, manages litigation with outside counsel, and provides guidance on corporate governance, contracts, risk management, and real estate matters. The position also supervises two paralegals.
- Lead the Legal Department and manage two paralegal direct reports, ensuring efficient operations and compliance
- Serve as in-house counsel and strategic legal advisor to senior leadership and the Board of Directors
- Provide expert guidance on corporate governance, contracts, risk management, real estate, and employment law
- Monitor and manage litigation and insurance claims in partnership with outside counsel
- Draft, review, and negotiate vendor contracts, procurement agreements, and other legal documents
- Oversee subpoena and medical record requests and ensure timely responses
- Support external audits, regulatory reviews, and complaint investigations
- Contribute to the organization’s real estate acquisition and property management strategy
- Stay current on laws, regulations, and industry best practices impacting nonprofit and healthcare sectors
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- License to practice law in New York State and active NYS Bar admission.
- Minimum of 5+ years of relevant legal experience, including nonprofit corporate law, contracts, commercial leases, real estate, employment law, litigation, and public sector procurement.
- 2–5 years of leadership experience managing legal professionals and administrative staff.
- Strong knowledge of corporate governance, risk management, and compliance in healthcare or social services settings.
- Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly.
- High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential matters with discretion.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong computer skills.
- Ability to travel to agency sites and other locations as needed.

Additional Information
This is a full-time exempt role with a salary of $175,000-$195,000 with a full benefits package. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, 25 days of paid time off, access to a retirement account with an employer to match, and tuition reimbursement.
This role is located in Briarwood, Queens with an expectation of working from the office 3 times per week.
