Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Chief Operating Officer (CLCO), the Bilingual (Spanish) Legal Advocate provides case management and support to clients engaging with WEAVE’s legal services. The advocate will interact directly with clients regularly. The advocate is responsible for providing case assistance to clients receiving direct representation, and for providing legal advocacy and emotional support for self-represented clients when assigned. Under the supervision of the CLCO or a staff attorney, the advocate will assist self-represented litigants with a variety of tasks associated with family law cases including completing Domestic Violence Restraining Order Requests, other family law court forms, gathering and organizing records, filing or retrieving documents from the court, or accompanying clients to hearings, law enforcement interviews, or other case-related activities.
Essential Job Functions:
- Create and maintain empowering, professional relationships with all clients to foster an atmosphere of empathy, safety, and support; advocate for clients in a manner that honors their individual experiences and is consistent with the client’s wishes.
- Actively work to reduce barriers to services for all clients and provide services that are responsive and inclusive to all survivors, regardless of their characteristics or experiences; approach all clients and cases in a survivor-centered, trauma-informed manner.
- Provide case assistance and support to clients receiving representation from WEAVE Legal staff attorneys or volunteers by attending client appointments and court hearings, assisting with document gathering and organization, and providing other support with issues impacting the client’s ability to fully engage in legal services.
- Perform legal administrative tasks like serving, mailing, or filing legal documents, calendaring court appearances, hearings, and trials and other deadlines for cases receiving representation from WEAVE Legal staff attorneys.
- Assist self-represented litigants, as assigned, with completing Domestic Violence Restraining Order Requests, other family law court forms, gathering supporting documents & evidence and accompaniment to court related events or law enforcement interviews. Assistance may be provided via individual appointments, drop-in hours, or workshops/clinics.
- Attend educational webinars and/or conferences as approved by the CLCO.
- Provide backup, supplemental support to the Legal Support Specialist for intake tasks such as screening clients and scheduling appointments with Legal Department staff.
- Maintain timely, accurate records of contacts with clients in WEAVE’s data tracking tool, Efforts to Outcomes.
- Other duties as assigned.
Bilingual responsibilities (when applicable)
- Accompany attorneys and clients to Court for informal interpretation.
- Participate in meetings with, and interpret or translate for, Spanish-speaking clients.
- Draft Spanish/English correspondence when needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Fluent in writing and speaking in English.
- Detailed oriented and able to manage multiple tasks at once.
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft office suite and database management.
- Ability to work with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault who are in crisis in an empathetic and culturally responsive manner.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Punctual, reliable and dependable; dedicated to providing positive customer service
- Successfully complete WEAVE’s peer counselor training program (post-hiring requirement)
- Valid California Driver’s license, reliable transportation, and current vehicle insurance
- Satisfactory results from a criminal background check
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associates degree in related field.
- Bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, or other languages is a plus.
- Experience working in a legal environment.
- Experience working with survivors of trauma.

Work environment is primarily a busy office setting in a two-story building with stairs and an elevator. Local travel (driving) may be required regularly. May need to occasionally lift or move up to 25 lbs., extend both arms above the head and/or reach below the waist, stoop, squat, crawl, bend the back to retrieve items, climb stairs, or use an elevator. Employee may also need to remain in one position (i.e. sitting or standing) for an extended period of time while completing work tasks. Must be able to efficiently operate a keyboard and mouse or adaptive equivalent, write reports, take notes; utilize desk tools such as phones or calculators, and utilize larger office equipment such as printers and copy machines.
