We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Paralegal to join our legal team. The ideal candidate will support our attorneys in diverse practice areas, which could include litigating Code enforcement cases, reviewing City contracts, assessing public records responses, assisting with bankruptcy claims, working on environmental matters, or any other issue that might arise for a local government. This role requires a proactive individual with solid organizational skills, strong analytical skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks from multiple attorneys efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Assist three to four attorneys in all aspects of their practice. The office has attorneys involved in all areas of law that touch on local government operations.
  • Assist attorneys in enforcing provisions of the Raleigh City Code and Unified Development Ordinance. This Code enforcement practice area involves basic litigation skills, including case management, discovery, motion practice, trial preparation, and appeals. You will draft documents and coordinate with witnesses and client representatives.
  • Organize and maintain case and matter files, both electronically and in hard copy, ensuring all documents are filed correctly and deadlines are met.
  • Schedule and maintain calendars and track deadlines, monitor and provide notification of court and other deadlines, as well as appointments and meetings.
  • Conduct the initial review of complex public records responses and coordinate with the Public Records Attorney on responses to records requests.
  • Review contracts during the City’s internal routing process to assure that they satisfy basic legal requirements.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries from internal department staff, outside counsel, citizens, developers, surveyors, appraisers and/or other stakeholders.
  • Perform legal research and cite-checking under attorney supervision.
  • Provide general administrative support to assigned attorneys.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Associate's Degree or 2 Years of College in Paralegal Studies or related field; 1 to 3 years' experience in paralegal, legal assistant, or related work

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three (3) years or more of experience in a law firm, government law office or corporate legal department
  • Strong understanding of legal terminology, civil litigation procedures, and documentation
  • Paralegal certification from an accredited institution

Additional Information

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint) and with Adobe Acrobat
  • Learn the use of Westlaw and case management software in use with the Courts and with the City Attorney’s Office

Work Environment and Physical Effort:  
Sedentary: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Work Environment:  
Work is typically performed in an office or similar environment.

Work Exposure:
Work in this position does not require frequent environmental exposures.
