Job Description

Performs clerical duties, providing general office support, assisting the Commonwealth’s Attorney with dockers and court preparation and procedures related to probation violations, and related work as required. Work is performed under the direction of the Probation Paralegal and supervision of the Commonwealth’s Attorney/Office Manager.

The hiring range for this position is from $22.73/hour to $31.26/hour based on experience.
The full salary range for this position is from $22.73/hour to $39.78/hour to provide opportunity for growth and development.

Examples of Duties

  • Provides support to prepare court dockets related to Probation Violations;
  • Provide legal secretarial services, maintain attorney and court calendars and dockets, serve as back up to the front office;
  • Prepares legal documents such as court orders, motions, writs, indictments, pleadings, etc. from descriptions and/or drafts of information to be contained within the document;
  • Maintains attorney's calendars for all upcoming criminal cases, trials, and events;
  • Performs basic legal research as required;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of legal office practices, procedures and techniques; 
  • Thorough knowledge of legal terminology and spelling; 
  • Thorough knowledge of departmental functions, organization and policies; 
  • General knowledge of the principles, methods and practices used in legal research; 
  • Some knowledge of municipal law; 
  • Ability to maintain involved office and legal records; 
  • Ability to organize and perform work independently; 
  • Ability to transcribe minutes and type at a minimum of 60 words per minute (wpm); 
  • Ability to work effectively with a team; 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, supervisors, employees, outside government agencies, and the general public.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) to five (5) years of administrative or secretarial experience as a legal secretary or assistant.  Probation violations experience and Notary Public License is desirable.
