Job Description:
About the Role
We are looking for a transactional attorney with entertainment marketing experience to support our Marketing, PR and Entertainment teams. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs, this position will provide legal counsel and business input regarding domestic and international marketing and promotional activities with respect to the theatrical release of major studio films and IMAX original content, in addition to IMAX’s home entertainment technology, direct-to-consumer activities and other business development initiatives. The role will also involve work relating to the distribution of IMAX original content and assisting with general corporate legal matters relating to the company’s Entertainment division. Title will be commensurate with experience of candidate.
This is a temporary position from June to December 2025.
The salary for this temporary position is based on an annual salary of $180,000.00 - $220,000.00 USD, pro-rated for the duration of the temporary employment period.
What You’ll Do:
- Providing legal support on a variety of campaigns/activations in traditional and digital/social media, including co-promotions and sponsorships, brand/media integrations, influencer promotions, sweepstakes/contests, promotional screenings and other events, promotional shoots, sizzle reels, decks/presentations, and merchandising.
- Drafting and negotiating a wide variety of agreements and other legal documents related to entertainment marketing and branding, including master vendor services agreements and statements of work, consulting agreements, acquisition and licensing agreements, media agency agreements, sweepstakes/contest rules, influencer agreements, talent and crew agreements for promotional shoots, releases, event agreements, font licenses, music licenses, clip licenses, and NDAs.
- Drafting and negotiating agreements with ad tech and software as a service (SAAS) providers.
- Reviewing creative materials to ensure clearance and conformity with applicable law.
- Providing strategic legal and business guidance to stakeholders of all seniority levels with respect to new business initiatives.
- Staying apprised of the latest developments in digital advertising laws and self-regulatory principles for media/entertainment and technology companies.
- Interfacing with outside counsel as necessary.
- Assisting with rights research relating to the digital distribution of IMAX original content.
What You'll Need:
- J.D. degree, strong academic credentials, and membership in good standing of the State Bar of California or willingness and ability to be Registered In-House Counsel.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience practicing intellectual property, corporate or transactional law at a law firm and/or in-house legal department.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working in marketing/advertising and intellectual property in the entertainment space.
- In-depth knowledge of intellectual property licensing and clearance.
- A good understanding of the latest developments in digital advertising and best practices for marketers, in addition to relevant federal and state consumer protection and data privacy laws and regulations.
- Familiarity with the basics of motion picture content acquisition and distribution is a plus, as is familiarity with SAG-AFTRA and other guild issues.
- Exceptional facility with spotting issues, assessing and communicating risks, making common-sense decisions in the face of ambiguity, and finding flexible/creative solutions to achieve business goals.
- Ability to balance multiple matters simultaneously and to respond quickly to shifting priorities under tight deadlines in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Highly motivated and resourceful with the ability to work proactively and independently.
- First-rate written and oral communication and negotiation skills.
- Can-do attitude with enthusiasm for the work and excellent people skills.
- Adaptability and openness to taking on tasks in new or unfamiliar areas of the law.
Compensation:
