Job Description

Bet Tzedek is seeking a Senior Grants Accountant to join our Finance team. The Sr. Grants Accountant role has oversight over grant accounting, pre-award budget compilation, post-award budget administration, and close-out financial reporting for grants assigned to this position. This role is instrumental in tracking grant budget oversight and monitoring key budgetary performance metrics, with the individual in this role using the information to engage in analysis and make recommendations to management and senior leadership regarding factors that impact grant performance, including staffing and other expenditures. This position is responsible for assisting in the preparation of monthly grant/contract billings to federal, state, and private funders, and ensuring compliance with GAAP, grant/contract standards, and internal guidelines. This role also assists with payroll and non-personnel allocations to grants. This position exercises independent judgment and discretion and is responsible for making recommendations to improve grant reporting procedures, compliance, accounting procedures, and grant performance. This role will handle salary and other highly confidential information and will assist with financial reporting and the month-end close duties and responsibilities. This position supports the Controller in the annual audit process, while ensuring accuracy and effectiveness in all accounting procedures. This position also works closely with the VP of Finance to ensure maximum utilization and reporting of grant funds.



This position is eligible for Bet Tzedek Legal Services’ hybrid/remote workplace designation. While the primary workplace is Bet Tzedek’s offices, at the discretion of the immediate supervisor, the employee may be permitted to work remotely or may be required to work in other locations depending on workload/business obligations.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Maintain knowledge of all assigned open grants and reporting requirements.
  • Allocate personnel and non-personnel expenses to grants while maximizing spenddown on expiring grants.
  • Prepare budgets for new grant applications; prepare budget vs actual comparisons on existing grants.
  • Prepare analysis and recommendations to management and senior leadership on changes necessary to remedy overspend or underspend situations, including staffing and expenditure changes; assist program managers with spenddown forecasts to remedy overspend or underspend situations.
  • Review grant coding on expenditures to ensure compliance. Prepare monthly grant & contract billing and reporting. Prepare journal entries and reconcile grants invoices with general ledger.
  • Assist in setting up improved accounting systems and dashboards for program managers to review revenue, expenditures, and grant projections.
  • Reconcile assigned general ledger accounts and prepare grant financial statements.
  • Maintain fiscal management of grants and contracts in accordance with funder requirements.
  • Performs grant-related pre- and post-award functions, including budget and expense analysis, periodic invoicing, financial reporting, labor distribution changes, and budget modifications.
  • Support with time and effort reporting, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Review and monitor subcontracts and ensure proper G/L reporting.
  • Ensure that grant expenditures are in compliance with funder regulations.
  • Lead and/or assist with associated program reviews and audits.
  • Other grant and general accounting duties as required.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Controller to assist in the preparation and presentation of requested items for the annual audit, funder audits and site visits.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration; or a combination of education and experience.
  • 4 to 5 years’ experience in nonprofit grant accounting.
  • Excellent working knowledge of nonprofit accounting including revenue recognition and donor restrictions.
  • Recent experience with modern accounting systems, preferably Financial Edge.
  • Knowledge and experience with accounting for grants, contracts, budgeting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Proven analytical skills with direct experience regarding financial statements is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of the payroll cycle is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of accounts payable and accounts receivable cycles.
  • Proven ability to handle highly confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and demonstrate the highest level of constituent service and response.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication as well as interpersonal skills conducive to the supporting of multiple programs with various needs.
  • Experience analyzing financial data, generating recommendations, and working with diverse team members to successfully communicate and implement recommendations to achieve financial goals.
  • Experience working in diverse cultural settings, pro-active and ability to relate and identify with the specific needs of the department as well as other staff.
  • Excellent proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office products.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.


  • This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
