Assistant Attorney General - Medicaid Fraud and Patient Abuse DivisionThe Office of the Utah Attorney General, Medicaid Fraud and Patient Abuse Division (also known as the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit), is seeking an experienced attorney to prosecute and litigate both civil and criminal cases involving fraud committed against the Medicaid program, and the abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation of vulnerable individuals. While the unit regularly handles matters involving criminal enforcement, civil enforcement is an equally critical component of this role and the selected attorney will be expected to carry a mixed criminal and civil caseload.
This position offers a unique opportunity to lead and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of attorneys, investigators, auditors, and nurses throughout all phases of investigation and litigation. The Division works closely with state, local, and federal partners, and handles a wide range of matters—from single-provider home health fraud and elder abuse cases to complex corporate schemes and national whistleblower actions.
The ideal candidate will have a robust background in both civil and criminal litigation, excellent courtroom and written advocacy skills, strong legal analysis, and the ability to manage multifaceted investigations. Candidates should also be adept at legal research, demonstrate sound judgment, and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Assistant Attorneys General in this Division benefit from active collaboration with the National Association of Medicaid Fraud Control Units, opportunities to work on high-impact national cases, access to specialized training, and involvement in the development of cutting-edge legal strategies. Select candidates may also have the opportunity to be cross designated as Special Assistant United States Attorneys (SAUSAs).
A background check is required as a condition of employment. Salary is commensurate with experience and follows the Attorney General’s Office career service matrix.
- Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Support investigations and prosecute both civil and criminal actions involving fraud against Utah’s Medicaid program, as well as the abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
- Conduct legal research and analysis, and facilitate appropriate case outcomes.
- Determine discovery needs, and/or complete discovery; participate in decision making and strategy sessions in preparing cases for court and determining evidence to be utilized.
- Conduct conferences with defendants and/or attorneys, negotiate settlements, and attend court appearances throughout the State.
- Collaborate with and present information to sister agencies, providers, associations, and key stakeholders regarding Medicaid fraud and the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable individuals and Medicaid recipients.

- Supplemental Information
- A Juris Doctorate is required.
- Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated; e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
- Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
- A conditional offer of employment will be made pending a satisfactory completion of a background investigation.
- Active membership in the Utah State Bar required.
- Must be able to travel as required.
- Valid driver's license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA 53-3-202(1)(a).
- Salary is calculated based on initial Bar admittance year, less any years not practicing law, as outlined below.
