It is filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. Position is located in: DFAS Office of General Counsel, Military and Civilian Pay - Indianapolis, IN
Duties- Serves as an expert level attorney for subject areas that include, but are not limited to: military, civilian, retired, and annuity pay.
- Provide legal basis for agency and DoD pay entitlements in areas that may include survivor benefits, unpaid compensation, civilian compensation, military pay and compensation, military retired pay, entitlements of wounded warriors and family members.
- Researches, drafts, and renders opinions on legal matters involving complex and difficult questions or factual situations and other especially critical or sensitive matters that arise within DFAS.
- Performs legal review of memoranda, letters, point papers, and responses to high-level inquiries that are received and advises the Deputy General Counsel, Principal Deputy General Counsel, and the General Counsel on these matters.
- Independently renders legal advice and counsel to DFAS senior management, supervisory officials, and others.
- Coordinates legislative issues within DFAS by tracking proposed legislation for impact on the directorate, researching the effects of the proposed legislation and drafting proposed legislation as necessary.
