Job Description

The Human Resources Division (HRD) of the Office of the Attorney General, a dynamic state agency with over 4000 employees, seeks an enthusiastic, resourceful, and hard-working individual for a part-time Legal Assistant. The selected candidate will assist with various matters, including employment law, human resources, the Public Information Act, accommodations requests, general research, unemployment benefits, workers’ compensation, and office operations. Note: This is a temporary, part-time position (up to 20 hours/week) that will end on or before 12/31/2025, with a possible extension.

Duties

  • Assists division lawyers with general research, EEOC position statements, and other legal matters
  • Assists with information requests (e.g., subpoenas, discovery requests, requests under the Texas Public Information Act) by retrieving, assembling reviewing, photocopying, and delivering records
  • Assists agency’s ADA Coordinator with processing accommodation requests
  • Assists with unemployment benefits applications and workers’ compensation matters
  • Assists the Human Resources Director, the Administrative Operations Manager, and other division managers with special projects and tasks, as necessary, including New Employee Onboarding, CLE presentations, Wellness Fair, and division events
  • Performs related work as assigned
  • Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
  • Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
  • Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
  • Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity

Salary
  • $1,750/month
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Completion of at least 30 semester hours at an accredited college or university
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Superior customer service and listening skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Skill and ability to communicate well with people of all levels
  • Skill and ability to quickly handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines
  • Skill and ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
  • Skill and ability to tolerate stress
  • Skill and ability to compose error-free emails
  • Skill and ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment
  • Skill and ability to be honest, reliable, trustworthy, respectful, and professional at all times
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication
  • Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making
  • Ability to work in-person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG work space within OAG work location, and perform in-person work with coworkers (e.g., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave)
  • Ability to arrange for personal transportation to get to work and for business-related travel
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
  • Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Currently pursuing a degree in pre-law, business, psychology, political science, history, English, or a related field
    Interest in pursuing a career in law
  • Excellent writing skills with a continued interest in improving such skills
  • Professional maturity and engaging personality
