The Civil Division is seeking entry-level attorneys to serve in positions throughout the organization. Selected candidates may be placed in any branch, office, or section based on mission needs. Attorneys represent the interests of the United States in a broad range of civil matters while supporting the Division's mission to defend federal programs and policies, protect government interests, and serve the public. Well-qualified candidates may be eligible for a signing bonus of up to $15,000.
Duties
As a Trial Attorney, the incumbent:
- Conducts legal research and analysis concerning the interpretation and application of statutes, regulations, and other legal authorities;
- Drafts legal memoranda, briefs, motions, pleadings, and other legal documents;
- Assists with the development, preparation, and handling of litigation matters;
- Participates in hearings, conferences, negotiations, and other litigation-related activities;
- Works closely with client agencies, Department leadership, attorneys, and other stakeholders on litigation and policy-related matters;
- Reviews and analyzes factual records, evidence, and legal issues to support case strategy and recommendations; and
- Performs other duties in support of the Civil Division's mission.
This is not a remote location position. You will be required to work in person five days a week. Salary
- $85,447 - $145,468/year

- May be required to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access depending on organizational assignment / duty location.

Interested applicants must possess a J.D., or equivalent, degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and be an active member of the bar in good standing by their entry on duty date. Law school graduates and current law students taking a July 2026 bar examination may be considered, subject to the foregoing requirements.
- To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, applicants must have up to one (1) year of legal experience.
- To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, applicants must have minimum (1) or more years post-J.D. legal experience.
- Qualifications must be met by the closing date of the vacancy announcement.
Preferred qualifications: Applicants should have excellent writing, negotiation, and interpersonal skills; exhibit good judgment. Trial work and judicial clerkship experience is desirable.
Trial Period Statement

8. If you opt to upload a document directly, click the "Upload" button and select the document on your device, then wait for the upload to finish. Repeat as needed. Documents must be less than 3 MB each and should be in a compatible file format.
9. Once all your documents are uploaded, you must assign the uploads to the appropriate document category. You may attach more than one document to each category. Click the drop-down menu for a document category, and select one of the available options in the menu. The document will be listed under this category. You can click the drop-down again to add other documents, as needed. You can have up to 15 document assignments.
10. Once you've uploaded and assigned all your documents to an appropriate document type, you can proceed to the final verification step, and click Submit.
