Job Description

Position Overview

The Associate General Counsel will support the Deputy General Counsel in overseeing the legal functions of the bank. This position will involve providing legal guidance on a wide range of commercial and retail banking matters, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, and managing legal risks.

This position is designed for a dynamic lawyer who thrives in a fast-paced, evolving environment and is energized by the opportunity to work across a wide range of legal disciplines and operational areas. The successful candidate will be expected to apply a commercial perspective, providing practical and risk-based advice on matters spanning commercial and consumer banking, regulatory compliance, commercial contracting, wealth management, and operational risk. While subject-matter expertise in relevant areas is welcome, the role is best suited for a lawyer who is intellectually curious, adaptable, and comfortable navigating ambiguity.

As a key member of Legal Solutions & Advisory Team (LSAT), the attorney will collaborate with colleagues across departments and geographies, contributing to strategic initiatives and helping to shape the legal framework that supports United’s continued growth and innovation. This is a highly visible role that requires strong judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build trusted relationships across all levels of the organization. The Associate General Counsel will also manage relationships with external counsel and other advisors.

The culture of United and LSAT is defined by service and performance. Candidate must share those values.

Required Education, Experience and Skills

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of legal experience, with a strong preference for in-house counsel experience at a bank or equivalent experience in private practice advising financial institutions.
  • Strong understanding of federal and state banking laws and regulations.
  • Experience working with or advising on matters involving regulatory agencies such as the OCC, FRB, FDIC, or state financial services regulators is a plus.
  • Intellectual curiosity and adaptability, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and legal risk mitigation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to think strategically and execute tactically, balancing long-term vision with short-term execution.

Job Functions

  • Provide strategic and practical legal advice across a wide range of subject areas relevant to United’s operations and growth.
  • Serve as a key legal partner to internal stakeholders across business units and geographies, supporting enterprise initiatives and day-to-day operations.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contracts and agreements, ensuring alignment with legal requirements and business goals.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in banking laws and regulations, advising on their impact and supporting compliance efforts.
  • Manage intake and resolution of sensitive legal matters, including litigation, regulatory inquiries, and internal investigations.
  • Collaborate with external counsel and manage legal vendor relationships to ensure effective and efficient legal support.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of internal policies, procedures, and training programs that promote legal awareness and operational excellence.
