At the County Attorney’s Office, our Legal Interns don’t just observe, they contribute. 
You’ll perform legal research, help draft pleadings, and assist in litigation under the guidance of experienced attorneys, gaining mentorship, confidence, and experience that will give you a competitive edge in law school and beyond.

Hiring Range: $24.00 - $28.00 hourly

Up to 10 hours per week with flexible scheduling to accommodate class commitments.

Legal Interns perform a variety of duties for the County Attorney’s Office under the general supervision of an experienced attorney and pursuant to the criteria of applicable Colorado statutes and regulations. Legal Interns perform legal research, draft court pleadings, assist with litigation matters, and attend legal proceedings. Employment is subject to the terms, conditions, and policies detailed in the Personnel Policies Manual (PPM). This position requires regular in-person presence as an essential job function.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs legal research of Federal and State statutes, case law, court cases and rules, and other documents.
  • Prepares written motions, orders, briefs, and appellate briefs as assigned.
  • Drafts court pleadings, correspondence, and other documents.
  • Assists with litigation matters as assigned. This may include document/file review, hearing preparation, observation of trials and hearings utilizing litigation skills, and communication with witnesses, County staff, and court personnel.
  • Attends trials, depositions, meetings, and hearings.
  • Becomes acquainted with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Provides general assistance to attorneys or legal staff as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Supervision Exercised: This classification does not have supervisory authority and requires no supervision or direction of others.

Supervision Received: Receives direct supervision. This classification normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. Frequent direction, guidance, and coaching from supervisor is expected.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Some knowledge of Federal and State laws, rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Must possess excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to conduct legal research.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County staff, community representatives, the judiciary, and the public.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in conformance with the policies and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise tact and impartiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to set work priorities and accomplish job duties in the required time period.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Required Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree. 
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school and have completed two years of legal studies. Job functions are subject to eligibility criteria of C.R.S. § 13-93-202.
Preferred Education & Experience
  • Experience working in the legal industry. 
Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation and drug screen.

Work Conditions

Duties are primarily performed in an office and court environment. This is a temporary position typically not to exceed five months.
