A Grant Funded Non-Represented Position
Part-Time (up to 30 hours per week)
Salary: $25.00 Hourly

The Court is looking for a customer service-oriented professional to serve as a member of our legal self-help program. This is an “At Will” Non-Represented Position.
We require at least two years of experience in a court setting or legal profession.
Must possess a demonstrated high level of verbal communication skills with strong interpersonal and engagement skills. We value analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as a demonstrated commitment to serving low-income individuals and underserved populations through lived or learned experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Legal Self-Help Liaison
Grant Funded – Part time Position
REPORTS TO: Civil/Landlord Tenant Division Director
JOB SUMMARY:
A Legal Self-Help Liaison (LSHL) will help visitors in the Self-Help Center to handle their own legal problems. The LSHL is a vital partner in ensuring 100% Access to Justice in the 36th District Court of Michigan because they assist people so they can access free online legal self-help resources and trained navigator staff who can answer visitors’ questions without giving legal advice.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
1. Providing excellent customer service to individuals who are handling their own legal problems. Excellent customer service includes service that is welcoming, kind, respectful, empathetic, and empowering.
2. Providing visitors guidance on using the self-help computers to complete forms and find resources to aid them in resolving their legal matters before the Court.
3. Understanding the difference between legal information and legal advice and providing as much assistance to all visitors as possible while staying within the bounds of legal information assistance.
4. Building relationships with courts, legal services, and other Court staff.
5. Assist visitors of the Court to engage with the remote navigators, when necessary, via the self-help computers.
6. Following all existing Court protocols; engaging in regular training sessions related to Self Help Center navigation.
7. Other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Candidates should have some familiarity with legal issues and/or court processes; excel at working independently.
2. High school diploma or equivalent is required. Two (2) years of education beyond high school are preferred.
3. Two (2) years of progressively more responsible work experience in a court setting or legal profession.
4. Demonstrate high-level verbal communication and customer service skills. We value analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as a demonstrated commitment to serving low-income individuals and underserved populations through lived or learned experience.
5. The ability to use a computer, navigate the internet, and use common software applications such as Microsoft Office and be comfortable learning new technology interfaces.
6. Must be able to work quickly and efficiently, even under the pressure of an electronic queue of Court visitors waiting to be served.
7. Must use discretion when dealing with confidential matters.
8. Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with the public and Court personnel in situations requiring tact and patience.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Normal office environment with little, if any, discomfort due to heat, dust, noise and the like.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
1. Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use a keyboard and video display terminal daily. Hearing to communicate with the public and court staff. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper. Occasional lifting of objects weighing up to fifteen (15) pounds such as files, stacks of paper, references, and other materials. Moving from place to place within an office. Some reaching for items above and below desk level.
2. Ability to occasionally sit, walk or stand for long periods of time, perform repetitive movements and work in confined areas.
