Overview:

The Senior Counsel will play a pivotal role in providing expert legal advice and support to the organization in all areas of federal and state employment law. This role requires exceptional judgment and decision-making skills, the ability to manage cross-region policy formation, and the capability to mentor and lead junior team members. The Senior Counsel will work largely unsupervised, demonstrating a high degree of evaluative judgment and innovative thinking.   Support the General Counsel in the implementation of legal strategies within the regions or globally, maintaining high compliance standards and work closely with peers from the Risk Management team to mitigate risks to the company.  Train and guide junior colleagues at country level.

In addition to the requirements of the job description for the Counsel role, the Senior Counsel will fulfill the following key responsibilities:

Judgment and Decision Making:

  • Analyze a wide range of complex and detailed facts or situations, deciding which facts are relevant.
  • Challenge facts and evidence at their own discretion.
  • Exhibit excellent judgment skills in high-pressure situations and advise mostly

C-Suite and C-1 Level:

  • Seek out and analyze all available information comprehensively before defining problems, drawing conclusions, and developing solutions.
  • Require a significant degree of evaluative judgment and innovative thinking.
  • Make regular decisions covering a variety of issues in their own function.

Policy/Service Development:

  • Manage cross-region policy formation.
  • Be acknowledged as an expert in their field, working largely unsupervised and managed from a distance.
  • Review existing operations in their area of work and implement innovation processes to generate new ideas, ensuring continuous improvements.
  • Contribute to the development of annual and longer-term business plans.

Planning and Organizing:

  • Plan and organize a broad range of complex activities, formulating and adjusting plans and strategies as needed.
  • Prioritize workload and responsibilities to align with personal, team, functional, and customer objectives.
  • Typically work on a timetable of three months or longer for their objectives.
  • Develop and deliver projects or workstreams within change management initiatives.
  • Document complex "as is" and "to be" processes, describing the changes required to migrate to the "to be" capability accurately.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

  • Work across functions, levels of management, and regions.
  • Act as a mentor for more junior team members.
  • Influence direction and approach through strong alignment with the customer, identifying solutions to their long-term issues and offering insights to support their strategic objectives.

Building Relationships and Networks:

  • Relate well to a broad range of people within and across departments by being approachable and demonstrating interpersonal sensitivity.
  • Proactively engage others by showing respect, care, and consideration for the views and contributions of all colleagues.
  • Show empathy and interpersonal sensitivity when dealing with others.
  • Establish collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Easily and effectively navigate the organization due to a broad network.
  • Develop and maintain a wide network of contacts and partnerships.

Mentoring/Leadership:

  • May have 2 employees to mentor/supervise or 1 employee in a different function or country/state.
  • May be a team leader in large-scale projects (time, geographical spread, or revenue).


Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education:

General Education

  • Recognized Juris Doctor (J.D.), or equivalent. Qualified to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction.

Experience:

General Experience 

  • Experience enables job holder to deal with the majority of situations and to advise others (Preferred Over 8 years). 
  • Experience in both private and government law practice strongly preferred.
  • Experience of coaching more junior colleagues (Preferred Over 12 to 18 months).

Managerial Experience

  • Not applicable.

Candidates must be within 250 miles of an APL Logistics facility or office.

The typical starting salary range for this position is: $126,357 - $180,510.

The actual salary offer will take into account multiple factors including skills, experience, and location. Please note that the salary details listed in role postings reflect the base salary only, not total compensation, which includes bonus and benefits.
