The Role
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Controller to oversee the firm’s accounting operations and financial reporting. In this hands-on role, you will manage all day-to-day accounting functions, safeguard financial data integrity, develop and maintain robust financial controls, and provide proactive financial insights to firm leadership.

Schedule
This is a part-time position expected to average 30 hours per week.
What You’ll Do
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, billing, trust accounting, and financial reporting.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual cash-basis financial statements, including the posting of monthly payroll journal entries.
- Provide financial analysis and reports to firm leadership to support strategic decision-making.
- Maintain and reconcile all corporate bank accounts.
- Manage all bank covenant calculations and prepare quarterly and annual reporting.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Work closely with the firm’s CFO to develop the annual budgeting process and financial forecasts.
- Monitor firm overhead, explain variances, and recommend corrective actions.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Develop and enforce internal accounting policies and procedures to safeguard assets.
- Manage audits and tax filings, coordinating directly with the firm's external CPA for corporate tax returns.
Payroll Administration
- Manage and process all firm payroll, ensuring all submission deadlines are met.
- Administer three distinct pay groups:
- Semi-Monthly: Hourly staff, paid on the 15th and last business day.
- Monthly Salaried: Shareholders, exempt staff, and salaried attorneys.
- Monthly Production: Attorneys on the production-based compensation model.
Retirement Plan Administration
- Serve as the primary plan administrator for the firm's 401(k) plan.
- Process employee contribution changes (pre-tax, Roth, loans).
- Manage and process all employer contributions.
- Submit timely 401(k) contribution and deposit files.
- Maintain participant data in the Fidelity plan sponsor website, including adding new hires and processing terminations.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Experience:
- 5+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience.
- At least 3 years in a Controller or senior accounting role.
- Direct, hands-on experience with complex, non-standard payroll (e.g., production-based, commission) is required.
- Prior experience in a law firm or professional services environment is strongly preferred.
- Skills:
- Proficiency with accounting systems (QuickBooks preferred) 36, full-service payroll platforms (Paycor preferred), and 401(k) administrator portals (Fidelity PSW preferred).
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong integrity and exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and collaboration skills.
Compensation
Shumaker & Sieffert offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package. The anticipated salary range for this part-time (30-hour/week) position is $78,750 -$97,500. (This is the prorated amount of a $105,000-$130,000 full-time equivalent salary).
