The Legal Aid Society of Rochester, NY is seeking a Legal Assistant to support the Attorney for the Child Program by providing legal support to LASROC’s attorneys and social workers in the Attorney for the Child Unit. This position will primarily assist in custody, child welfare and juvenile delinquency matters
Duties:
- Database management, open files in Legal Database and update attorney calendars
- Some client interaction
- Drafting and filing of correspondence, pleadings, documents, and forms, monitoring of cases and court appearances
- Case organization
- Assist with hearing and trial preparation
- Provide additional administrative and case support as needed.
- Open and monitor files and send follow-up correspondence.
- Schedule appointments for clients in the office and virtually.
- Answer the telephone and obtain relevant information from the caller to promptly communicate to the attorney/social worker
- Serve and file papers with the Family Court, subpoena witnesses, communicate with parties and court personnel, some local travel is required to serve papers in Monroe County
- Participate in LASROC office functions, including program staff meetings and other LASROC office meetings.
- Additional duties as assigned by the supervising secretary or division director.
Qualifications:
- Associates degree in Paralegal Studies or High School Diploma with equivalent experience.
- Notary Public License (If not currently licensed, must be able to pass the notary exam).
- Strong attention to detail and organization.
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task.
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills.
- Must be a team player and have a positive and cooperative work attitude.
- Some local travel may be required to serve papers in Steuben County.

- Extended periods of sitting at a desk or workstation while performing administrative tasks

- Ability to communicate effectively with associates, supervisors, and external stakeholders in person, over the phone, or via email

- Work will be performed in an in-office environment
- Occasional travel may be required for attending training sessions, conferences, or other related events.
