Job Description

The Department of Human Services is seeking a detail-oriented, organized, and dedicated Legal Assistant 1 to become an integral member of our team in the Bureau of Hearings and Appeals (BHA). In this role, you will perform a variety of legal administrative tasks related to the processing and adjudication of administrative appeals and hearings. In this position, you will provide legal clerical support for Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) and Legal Assistant 2s in BHA. Your work will involve analyzing appeals for compliance with procedural regulations, applying these regulations to make recommendations, and tracking deadlines to ensure timely processing of appeals. You will determine parties who require notification and send appropriate notice according to the schedule maintained on the master calendar. Your duties will include processing incoming appeals, notifying parties regarding any changes, and completing data entry using a computer database. As an assistant, you will prepare subpoenas and other legal documents for signature by ALJs, as well as review adjudications for inconsistencies or errors and makes recommendations for changes. Additionally, you will prepare and maintain appeal files, operate office equipment, and maintain the inventory of office supplies.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: Upon successful completion of your probationary period and training period, you may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. Your work assignments will primarily take place in the office. However, telework may be available based upon individual eligibility and the operational needs of the Bureau. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: Starting salary is non-negotiable.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of responsible clerical, enforcement or investigative work;or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
