Job Summary:

The Medical Legal Partnership (MLP) Post-Baccalaureate Associate will work closely with Dr. Shaniece Criss from the Department of Health Sciences and the Institute for the Advancement of Community Health to support MLP research activities. Duties will include supporting literature reviews, data collection, data cleaning, data analysis, and writing of study results for reports and journal manuscripts.

Job Description:

Background:

“Medical-legal partnerships integrate the unique expertise of lawyers into health care settings to help clinicians, case managers, and social workers address structural problems at the root of so many health inequities” (https://medical-legalpartnership.org/). The Carolina Health Advocacy Medicolegal PartnerShip (CHAMPS) puts this model into practice by addressing legal issues that impact health outcomes. Some clinicians have even reported turning to CHAMPS instead of filing reports with the Department of Social Services (DSS), avoiding potential disruptions to families based on unsubstantiated claims.

To better understand how medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) can serve as an equitable child welfare prevention strategy, CHAMPS partnered with Furman University and the Access to Justice (A2J) Lab at Harvard Law School on a randomized control trial combined with community-engaged research. Within this collaboration, Furman University leads the facilitation of a community advisory board (CAB), ensuring that community voices shape the research process, address local concerns, and inform cultural adaptations. In addition, Furman directs the collection and analysis of interview data, bringing community insight and academic rigor together to strengthen the study’s impact.

Fellow Responsibilities:

  • Conduct literature reviews to support project design and analysis
  • Help develop CAB activities to ensure community input shapes the study
  • Support analysis of qualitative data from interviews
  • Draft sections of academic journal articles
  • Contribute to additional project tasks as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Earned bachelor’s degree from Furman University; prefer student planning on further graduate level education in a health or public health related career;
  • Ability to collaborate with staff, faculty, students and community partners;
  • Research experience.
